I think it is great. Females deserve a starring role in Trek for once. They have been ignored far too often with the exception of Voyager

I was just thinking that the show would be better if it happened more often than it does.. I agree with you

Females in Trek:

TOS had Uhura on the bridge, very significant for the time period.
TNG had Crusher as the CMO, Troi on the bridge, and Kieko as a botanist.
DS9 had Jadzia Dax as science officer, Kira as first officer, Kieko as a schoolteacher, and later Ezri as first a counsellor and (in the relaunch) XO of the Defiant.
VOY had Janeway as Captain, Torres in engineering, Seven in the alcove, Kes in the Airponics bay.
ENT has T'Pol as science/first officer, Hoshi at Communications, and Cutler in Sickbay.

I don't see any significant improvement in the representation of females in Trek here......

Janeway was the first female captain on a series where she was the main character. So there are a lot of first.

Oh! I just remembered. Lt. Saavik was actually the first female Vulcan to have a major role (though technically she was in a series of movies, not a TV series).

Of course, she's technically half-Vulcan half-Romulan.

I think ds9 was good having a Black Captain showing that in the future Racism would have been overcome so it focused on different characters more than Enterprise

yeha but when the original series came out they had a bunch of different races an during that time there was lots of controversy about that type of thing.the same thing is true with the next generation.they have quite a few black people onboard and lots of different races.
