How can holograms pick up stuff?

How can they? if they are just projected light and energy how is it possible that they can pick up stuff and yet (hypotheticly) if you hit one with a baseball bat they wouldn't get hurt at all

quite simply holograms work on photons and forcefields. to put it in simple terms, the EMH is made up of a hologram and a forcefield like one seen in the brig. i can explain more technically if u like.

Holographic technology takes care of the image and subroutines etc. via the emitters.
When activated these also create an electromagnetic forcefield which enables the holographic image to grip and manipulate objects.

This forcefield would be limited to inside the holomatrix...though I don't really know! Still the above - Plausable?

Okay... I actually know this now. It has to do with forcefields. holograms are made of forcefields and photons to quote the doctor. ^^; *is proud of self*

Generally, holographic projections have forcefields projected around them, enabling them to interact with thier environment. This forcefield may be turned off if desired, though.
