PostThu Aug 08, 2002 4:58 pm    Your thoughts about "The Inner Light" ST:TNG

I live in Denmark and these shows often has a long way before any danish network would consider airing them. TV Denmark 1 is now airing ST:TNG and its the first time i've seen it. Yesterday the episode "The Inner Ligth" was shown. It really got to me!

It is the one were Picard is hit by some beam from and unidentifiable probe and lies unconsius on the floor of the bridge. But in his mind he is living an entire life on the planet Kataan as the ironweaver Kamin. While the crew tries to awaken Picard we see him accepting the fact that he will never learn what happened to him that day in the bridge. He finally accepts it and slowly i believe he forgets his life as Jean-luc Picard. He decides to have children with his wife on Kataan.

In the real world the crew discover that the probe originated from the planet Kataan which was detroyed in a nova-incident almost a 1000 years ago(how did they know that, anyway).

After 30 years on Kataan, Picard have probably forgotten everything about his life on the Enterprise. One day as a very old man while playing with his grandson, his now grownup daughter visits his old father. She says that he has to go she the launch of a missile. Kamin follows her to the city market where people are gathered.

When he asks his daughter what kind of missile it is, she says that she think he allready knows. He finally gets an explanation, that the missile thay are launching is the probe he will meet in the future, or have met. All his friends are appearing in front of him, his old friend and wife who all have passed away years ago. They explain that they wanted to be remembered, and now he can tell people about them.

Picard awakens one the bridge and finds that only 25 minutes have passed in the real world. WOW!

Now, we all know Picard has a strong mind, but anyone else than Picard whould have had a brain meltdown of enormous proportions...

But what did you think about it?? Any thoughts?

I think its because there's not enough Trekkies here. Star Trek is way more popular here in the south, than further up to the North.

I haven't seen the Inner light but I have seen a Voyager episode a bit similar. Voyager was orbiting a planet which aged many years while only 15 minutes In Voyager's time passed. Soon a species emerged on the planet and started a Civilization. As only 5 mins for Voyager had passed, 1 thousand years had passed for this Civilization I think. This Civilization grew and researched new Technologies, and soon advanced through the ages. Soon Janeway decides to send the Doctor to Investigate. When they tired to beam the Doctor back up they couldn't because something was wrong. Soon they managed to beam the Doctor back up but when the Doctor came back, he said he had been living on the planet for 3 years. He had been In the Industrial Reveloution on the planet. He had married and had a son. Soon the Civilization sent a spaceship to Voyager to Investigate It. When they got Inside Voyager, everyone was not moving. The astronauts from the ship searched Voyager but soon fainted when Voyager's crew starting moving around again. One of the astronauts had been killed but one had survived. It was due to the time difference why they fainted. Janeway questioned the astronuat and soon sent him back down to his planet. When he returned to his planet, 50 years had passed since he left his planet. He soon convinced his goverment about Voyager and let them go. When Voyager just left orbit of the planet, the astronuat was an old man.

I'm sorry If I left quite a few things out but It's been a while since I saw the episode.

PostTue Sep 10, 2002 6:20 am    The Inner Light

There is a Voyager episode along those same lines. The called "Memorial". Where they pass through this planets system & something on the planet was programmed to give anyone who passes through a memory that they were in a war. Just so the event would never be forgotten. Just like with the TNG "Inner Light" episode, this object was programmed to inplant a memory of this planet & the people that were on it. Very cool!
