PostTue May 21, 2002 4:19 pm    Who believes in the existence of extraterrestrials?

Who believes that there is intelligent life on other planets?

I like to keep an open mind on the subject. There is so much about space we do not know I think there is a possibility. Who knows whats out there?

But having said that, there has to be the right planetary conditions to sustain life and so far, as far as I'm ware of that we have not found a planet with similar conditions to Earth. Such as the rite temperature, atmosphere etc.

Please correct me if I am wrong, Scientists believe there may have been water on Mars and one of Jupiters moons had ice on it and bacteria was found on asteroids and Mars. I think that is the closest we have got to find any other life sustaining evidence in space. But who says they have to live in the same conditions as we do?

I think it would be awful waste of space if nothing else was out there.

Sure we would like to feel that we are special, but in all of Space there has to be other life.

The chnce of life crated randomly is very small. THe channce of that life becomming intellegent is even smaller. Yet the number of planets in the universe probably compensates for both, and I believe there must nbe intellegent life out there.

i heard that astronemers from the Hawaii observertory (largest on earth, same power as hubble) found a planet in a nearby system that is 'm class' that it may have primate species on it. but it's a lot of speculation

I agree. There are trillions of planets in the universe;proablly more. Almost certinely there must be other life in the universe. Mars has ice on it on both of the poles. As for ice being on a moon of Jupiter I am not sure.

I have been in that observatory, and I got to use the telescope, just thought that I would share.

Really! Wow Cool

I do like to think we are not a lone. It is almost certain that our solar system is not unique. The motion of several near by stars such as Bernards star suggests that they may be perturbed by the gravitational force of planetary companions. Astrophysics recon about 20 billion of the stars in our galaxy there is likely to be at least one planet at the right distance to sustain life. But does any one believe that aliens abduct people? You here so many stories about abductees, they also recon aliens have something to do with cattle mutilations.

I think thats a little strange why travel all the way to Earth just to experiment on people, spy and mutilate cows? I think that is a bit of a pointless exercise. If mankind travelled all that way we would probably make contact.

I do. I think they're just around... observing us... doing no harm... maybe amused at our speculations.

Which makes me wonder...

What do they think about Star Trek?!?

i think there must be atleast one other planet in the universe with the right climate to produce life. and in our vast universe the chances of another form of life is huge. and if humans can become intellegent they must be able to also.

I think that there must be another intelligent species out there. But think, centuries ago, there was that advanced city, Atlantis, which people belived existed, but couldnt find. Then they found proof. It turned out that they were more advanced than the rest of the plannet at that time. Well if they had not been wiped out, we would probably be more advanced than we are. That was a set back, if there was another plannet out there which had similar development to us, but without the set backs then there could be a species out there cose to warp capable.

Also i have another theory, you know they talk about the missing link in our evolution? well what if humans were put on earth as an experiment, and it is UFO's are just the people who put us here checking up on us?? OK too deep.

But you know on voyager, when that species were conducting experiments on the crew, but the crew couldnt see them. Things would happen with no explanation, the doctors program being shut down by one of them (although he managed to transfer to the holodeck). Well i think that that is possible here.

Ever get the feeling that your not alone, maby your not???

I think so.. I mean when you think about it, what are the odds that we are the only intelligant life? Its like people used to believe that we were at the center of the universe and we were superior. I think there is other life but I dont think its all about green people with bulbus heads...

I'm open to the idea. It used to freak me out, but since getting more into Star Trek, I've come to grasps with the theory that perhaps alien life really doesn't have an agenda to kill us all I think it would be rather unbelieveable if we were indeed the only race to inhabit this universe, and quite disappointing...in a way, it's rather frightening that there might be life out there, but it's sort of neat too. I just hope that if we do meet other beings, we don't blow them up before asking questions--our entire race is known to shoot first, and take responsibility later. Not exactly the best attitude you'd want for First Contact...

PostThu Aug 15, 2002 11:51 pm    Life

I have read most of the replies in this discussion. Most of the people repling do believe in life on other planets. The one disturbing idea is that most are saying is that the conditions need to be like earth, in order to support life. What about the time that voyager stopped on a Y class planet and found life, yes in different form, but still life.
