Unbelievable--these people are simply brilliant. Take a dozen episodes that all seem contradictory and weave them into a coherent theory of FTL travel.

what i dont dont understand is why they didnt made voyager go at warp 10 they would have been home in a couple of seconds and ones there the doctor could have treated the entire crew for that ugly transformation

problem with that is, that warp 10 itself makes the ship be in every position in the universe simultaniously. but there is no control to have it positioned in the right spot. ie. the ship would when passing warp 10 be in sort of (compensate for the distance travelled) the same spot....if I interpreted it correctly...

Didn't The USS Pasteur go to warp 13 though in All Good Things? Surely that means that travelling beyond warp 9 is possible regardless of the fact that it is in an alternate universe thing?

The site mentioned earlier gives a good explanation. Briefly, the familiar warp factors are where power usage drops off. For example, Warp 5.9 actually uses more power than Warp 6 does; however, Warp 5 would take less power than Warp 6. (This much is explained in the TNG tech manual.) Warp 10 (and multiples of 10) require infinite power. However, Warp 11 might take less power than Warp 9! (The following numbers are hypothetical.) On the other hand, Warp 11 might only be as fast as Warp 5. That's okay, because the power usage curves say that Warp 11 might take less power than Warp 3--it's still an overall win.
It's long been established that warp drive circumvents relativity by accelerating so fast that it's never actually at lightspeed--it accelerates from almost-there to just-over in the Planck time (which is the smallest unit of time possible). If you could somehow push past Warp 10 without actually sitting on it, you would have a similar effect.

hold on....that is not what I understood of it.
What I get is that warp 8 uses less power then warp 13. But the immense ammount of speed gained makes the power used by [whatever unit of distance you want to use], more favourable at warp 13
When approaching say warp 19, the increase from warp 18 to 19 would take much more power (because you are nearing warp 20, which gives you infinite speed) for instance then the increase from warp 13 to 14 would. Its actually quite simple, same goes in a way for earodynamics of transsonic flight.

Anyway, basically its this way: If Warp 10 in infinite speed, then there must be *plenty* of room for Transwarp and Slipstream speeds below that.
Its just that standard Warp Drive is incapable of reaching those speeds, so that Warp scale doesn't take those into account. Transwarp and Slipstream are alternate propulsion methods, which *can* reach those speeds.
Now, off to Trek Tech.... |
I agree. however transwarp is not that far from inifinte velocity! Slip stream is rated fo 900/ly an hour!

Hmm. That "in a Plank time" concept is rather intersting. Theoretically, if you could achieve, say, warp 98 in under a plank time you would never hit infinite speed nor need infinite energy (which is already required for lightspeed-- it actually looks like the writers took that basic idea (which is known to be true today, one can accelerate a particle to 9.|99| lightspeed but actually hiting it requires infinite energy) and ran with it) since anything happening in under 10^-43 (is that right?) doesn't matter.

Here a question, remember the experiment with warp 10, that they had in the early stages of the voyager season? Well, what sort of surprised me was that there was no further pursueing of the possibllities there. Altrhough that eppisode was one of the weaker ones, especially with that accelarated evolution theory, the idea behind it was quite nice.
So tom did manage to reach warp 10. that would have made it possible for voyager to study more and for the doctor to find something against that accelarated evolution stuff, and to get home..... Well, this sort of puzzles me.
Anyway, great forum this guys, I'll frequent this more often! |
