Wed Jun 19, 2002 2:08 pm about that warp 10....... |
|
First of all, hi you all, I am new to this scene, but always have been quite a star trek fan. From cpt kirk onward.
Here a question, remember the experiment with warp 10, that they had in the early stages of the voyager season? Well, what sort of surprised me was that there was no further pursueing of the possibllities there. Altrhough that eppisode was one of the weaker ones, especially with that accelarated evolution theory, the idea behind it was quite nice.
So tom did manage to reach warp 10. that would have made it possible for voyager to study more and for the doctor to find something against that accelarated evolution stuff, and to get home..... Well, this sort of puzzles me.
Anyway, great forum this guys, I'll frequent this more often!

It's nice that you like the forum, but I have to disagree a little with you.
The crew maybe tried to make it possible to reach Warp 10 afterwards, but since the thing that happends to Tom, I think they weren't to keen on another go.
Warp 10 is uncontrollable so far, "Threshold" proved that.
However, in the Trek future, who knows what will happen?
Btw; WELCOME!!

Hi, tnx.
ok, I understand the fact that its uncontrollable. that would explain why it isn't pursued.
But then again, what is transwarp? I mean voyager tops at somewhere in the top end of warp 9. so if voyager would reach its top at warp 9.8, transwarp would be at warp 10's range .
if I have to compare it to our current knowledge of the speed of sound...(I am a pilot ) and compare subsonic transsonic and supersonic.
transwarp has to be comparable to transsonic.
Transonic is the transsition where part of the wing is subsonic and an other part is supersonic. ( I won't go to much into details here ) that would make the warp top speed of voyager in that range as well.
Therefore warp 9.8 would already be transwarp. Now according to the series, that is not the case, and the only ones traveling at transwarp are the borg and some other species I believe. So if transwarp is not warp 10's region of going from lets call it subwarp into superwarp (probably made up some new words here) then what is it????..............
ok, maybe too many questions, but I know that there are some great thinkers in the star trek community who can come up with all the answers and theories used.

But Warp 20 is equvent to the Transwarp factor of 9.19

Voyager can go max Warp 9.975, I don't know but the very end of that scale might be equal to transwarp...

ok, I follow it till there, but what makes you think transwarp 9.19 is in fact warp 20? I missed you there.

wow, this is great! Not does it fully explain where my thought were going wrong, it also gives me a great insight. So, in other words, transwarp starts to exist the moment warp 10 is achieved. warp 10 gives you for a brief moment infinite speed. then all returns to normal passing it. These bariers, that seem to start to exist every 10th warp # are amazing. so the borg travel at greater speeds, then warp 10, but not at infinitive speed.
I like this theory....
Thanks again for the link there!

Yup! Originally ST went way byond warp 10 they then decided to make it more realalistic by putting it back down to 10 they execused tthemselves from this by giving us a formula to get the real system to work!

That formula interests me, what is it based on?

Well the nice thing about star trek is that everybit of technology and every alien species met have been very well thought out, it is just an idea, its a world

Trek college? Not exactly, but..... www.kli.org
Anyway, basically its this way: If Warp 10 in infinite speed, then there must be *plenty* of room for Transwarp and Slipstream speeds below that.
Its just that standard Warp Drive is incapable of reaching those speeds, so that Warp scale doesn't take those into account. Transwarp and Slipstream are alternate propulsion methods, which *can* reach those speeds.
Now, off to Trek Tech....
