I don't think he would have been a great captain like Kirk or any of the others. i.e., In STVI, when Praxis explodes, and the shock waves are coming at the Excelsior, he just stands there and says, "My God." He finally does act, but if that had been a critical/split-second type of situation, his ship would have been destroyed.

I think he was good. When it comes right down to it......
Well, it just sounds so cool when he says "Target that explosion and FIRE!" in Star Trek 6.
I think a Captain Sulu series *could* have worked, in fact. There's an online petition for it somewhere around the net. Not that I think it will ever happen.

well, base on what you wrote, he is geting there... but it you think about it, the Excelisor is a new prototype, we should give him a break, not a big one, but he could learn from his mistakes.

But remember, this was at the end of his THREE year mission, which means he had had time to "learn from his mistakes". I like the part at the end of STVI, but as far as I can see, that was his only good moment. Even the "fly her apart then" sucked.

Well, look at it this way, if every captain was Kirk and Picard standard, then Kirk and Picard woulnd't be as cool. You gotta have some medieum grade captains, so the really cool captains can look really cool.

I think he would have made an OK-ish captain but I not all that good. I'd have him removed from an Excelsior-class and stick him on a nice Oberth class where it's not all that complicated (me thinks)..that way he might react quicker...

I think Sulu may not be as hard a captin as janeway or picard but he does have a gd captin LOOK to him, and has good leader ship qualitys.

Sulu also lasted a lot longer.... wasn't he still captaining until 2350. Hmmm, seem to recall a Voyager character other than just Tuvok was influenced by him.... Can we say... Chakotay?
Hmmmm, would have thought that someone would have mentioned it by now.
