I think the ship genrates a field that stops the ships motion.

remember science is always changing answers, maybe in the future newtons laws would be disproven.

Newtonian physics have been disproven already by a certian genius working in a patent office. Anyway, as far as I know all engines exept the manuevering thrusters deform spacetime (note- no dash) in one way or another. Warp engines form a "warp" in spacetime, just like an object of immence mass, but in a more controlled manner. That reqires energy that can only be obtained by annihilating antimatter with matter. When that reaction stops, in the best case the ship will drop out of warp. In the worst case it will cause some sort of a "ripple" in spacetime and distort everything around it. So clearly power is required for warp engines to work and for the ship to be propelled (actually, it's more of a sliding motion) forward. As for impulse, I do not know how it operates but I imagine it has to be generating some sort of field. No field=no motion in this case.

I agree that impulse engines operate on with a feild of so sort. However, thruster, too, warp spacetime, everything does. The warp may not be noticable by our standards but it is there.

I dont think the thrusters manipulate spacetime, I think they actually propell the ship.

Everything that has gravity can warp spacetime. Unless you are planning o change the laws of physics I don't see how your view point is possible. Unless you are talking about the thrust produced by the engine...ahh this just gives me a headache!

well, of course (since acceleration is of the smae nature gravity) . However, on the scal we are talkign about here warping spacetime in not the primary effect of the thrusters...

I know that but they do warp spacetime to some degree. that was my point
