We all want replicators, holodecks and transporters to be a reality, and many of you have posted ideas in other forums for how the technology works. Well in this forum I want us to be able to work together on realistic ideas to make the technology now. Come on you all know you want to.

The main reason most people watch Startrek, is because of the ideal utopia that earth is there, because of the technology. (Although i did watch Voyager because of the technology, but because of 7 of 9, the best piece of technology on the ship).

Technically, (I believe this is right, im not sure)

E=MC2<-----(put the two on top of the C

Energy=Mass X Light.

My science teacher told me this is one exception to the rule that energy cannot be create or destroyed. This equation creates energy. At least, I think thats what she said.

with our current level of technology replicators, transporters and holodecks are TOTALLY impossible.
the closest we can come to a holodeck are projections on the wall...
replicators is the resequencing of matter, we can't do that... the best we can do keep DNA of animals in a computer, clone the animal, slaughter it, cook it, and then push it through the wall.
transporters - never gonna happen in my lifetime!!!!!!!! (i am 1 we don't have computers that could store that much information. it would take billions of gigabytes to store the information about your body at one given time. and it would end up being cloning (even if we could). you take all the information about my body, send it to another location(placeB). that would still leave me in place A. so they would kill me in place A and then clone me in place B

nothing is impossible. although it is highly, highly, highly, highly, extremely improbable.

no... things are impossible... there are things that cannot happen... for example, my computer (the pathetic piece of junk it is) could never invade the body of Bush and take over the world!

In computing class, we were tod that a higher level of computer technology exists now, even though it is not on the market. The current standard pentium processor is 1Khz-2Khz. Intel have already developed the 4Khz processor, they are working on the 8Khz prosessor, this will continue during our life time. By the time im 30 there should be (in theory) 1000Khz processors, which would almost surpass the processing power of the Enterprise NCC1701. Maby not Galaxy class specs but not bad. If the same thing happens with storage then replicator technology will become a posibility in our lifetimes because we will have the technology. Also, I read in a car magazine that a new Toyota has a dashboard that uses holographic technology. It was a concept car and the holographic stuff was behind perspex, but this is now so you never know. Am I the only person here who is not synical?

Warp-drive but it is highly unlikely. They have sub-atomic particales that are beleaved to have the ability to travel faster than the speed of light. No one has ever recorded a partical though. Nasa is actualy working on using ion destripubters to use ion energy as a much more effichient source of energy. And ion energy can make rockets travel faster than old rocket fuel. They are planing on using ion energy distrubiters on the maned mission to mars.

Story Teller:) It is possible, if you programmed it to, then initiated a neural link between the two, maybe bush could raise his IQ to a possible . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .3?

Actually, there isn't really an easy way to compare computing of today to computing of a time like Enterprise.
We still run in binary, just on and off. Modern computer cores, at least in the TNG - Voyager timeline run on a more matrix style computing. I know I'm not one to really speculate about this, but they could run from 8 variable bits to maybe even something like 16 or 32.
Perhaps the terms of giga- and tera-quads are like bytes of today, holding sets of 4 variable bits instead of 2. You'd be surprised how much more data just 2 more bits can do to a single byte of data.
A single byte holds 8 on and off bits, allowing for 256 variables per byte.
A quad or whatever uses 4 variables would shoot that up to 65,536 variables, most likely the color depth you're using at this time as well...
If I remembered right, in a Voyager episode where their computer core was completely stolen, a man asked for the processor's speed, it was somewhere in the trillions of calculations per nanosecond, just a bit faster than us. Not to mention we could by clock speed in cycles, some already go by floating point operations (FLOPS) instead of cycles since it's an inaccurate means of comparison. The processors of Apples run more efficiently than Pentiums and Athlons because of how they handle data. Eh.. I've gone on another endless speech, I'll shut up now. ^_^;;

we won't have the technology for replicators, because we cannot replicate matter or change its form. we would have to have the information of each type of food in the computer, and then take a host, and inject it with that information (cloning) we are very far from creating food from matter... right now we inject it into predeveloped versions of the same animal...

as for the holographic stuff in a car... it is frosted glass with a projection of the meters and gauges... all it is is a light shined on the back of the glass... making it appear to be holographic... it is holographic in the same way that the TV is, your computer monitor, and movie theatres...

you ar right vulcanmanmike... we can't do warp drive, because only energy can travel the speed of light - because energy does not have mass.. the faster you go, the larger your mass gets, the more fuel you need to make you go faster, the larger your mass becomes - ect...
we need to change physics surrounding a vessel to get to faster than speed light - ion engines are being created, but are not even close to light speed...
as well another problem is, at speeds of 2-3 miles / second (shuttle speeds) a fleck of paint can rip a large hole in the wing of the ship... at warp speeds it would destroy the ship easily... we need to develop some sort of shield that would bounce the particals, or destroy them...

You guys should read The Computers of Star Trek. It talks of the computers, present, history, and future of the computers of Star Trek and today.

This as well will not happen. The time we have a computer like the enterprise, will be when the show takes place. In the 24th century. Sorry guyz but we won't be around to see it. Unless they freeze you and then thaw you so you can see the computer but that's it.

uhhh, well hate to bust your bubbles guys, but right now, even when TNG started coming out, we were more computically advanced then they are.

Incorrect.
We are ALREADY able to transport items about an inch long a half metre.

we do have replicators now. They arn't as advanced though. They can program it to sequence, and it creates a mold of whatever they want.

PostSat Apr 20, 2002 7:56 pm    Future Technology

Wouldn't it be wonderful? Replicators, Advanced Super-computers, Weapons and sheilds, Space travel...

But, there are a couple of things that I'm a bit confused about. Actually, they could probably be discribed as major problems...
1. At warp speed, amagine what would happen if you hit another vessel travelling at warp speed...
2. If space is multi-directional, (ie, no up or down), then why do ships always meet upright to each other on the show?
3. Almost all other life-forms on the show speak English, and not to mention have an American accent.

I wish the future would turn out exactly like Star Trek on TV, (Voyager is my favourite) but it is unlikely.
Then again, I was reading the other day and found that it may be possible to make Replicators in the future using "micro-robots" that can build individual bits of matter. That would mean we could make ANYTHING!

What get really excited about is the computer aboard Voyager, wouldn't it be cool?

One final thing, does anyone know where I can e-mail the cast of Voyager, want to get an autograph...

Anyway guys, will be around... C ya.
~Ryan

Incase you dont know the first thing in history has alredy been transported it was a beam of light from one atom to another im not exacly sure how this was accomplished but it has been it was on tv.

PostMon Jul 22, 2002 1:25 pm    Ideas

I know i was being a little (well ok very dumb) when i started this topic, but i honestly belive that technology ssuch as that shown in startrek. Technology is moving faster than ever before. The army is constantly moving technology on to have the advantage over the enemy. Nuclear power came to be in no small part thanks to war. Now we have the threat of nuclear war to worry about, and this great power source to use. We are just to iresponsible to use it at the moment. The Vulcans would call us an immature child race, and in some ways we are.

Back to technology. Look at a TNG tricorder, and then look at one of the new colour mobile flip phones. Add a few small scanners and we would have something approching a tricorder.

In England (Where i am, not the spelling of colour) there is a place called the BNFL, who have worked out a way to reuse nuclear waste. Much like Voyager where they reuse the waste products from the core.

Computers are moving on, and all of the people on this topic who have said that things cant happen, are the people who will hold us back. (No offense) but the only things that will stop Voyager like technology from happening is people saying it is impossible.

I completely agree, We can do anything we put our minds too!

Warp Theory has come a long way! It is still far from being vreated, but we have alot ohf ideas to start off with!

I think its possible the few supplies we have now it wouldnt be hard to build a tricorder like he said in about 10 years all those technologies would probaly be accessible (If you know how they work )

I already told andrew paris a Possible Warp Engine thing but I don't wanna share cuz I don't want humans to Explore the galaxy.

Think they trashed Earth. Polluted the streams. cut down the forest.
abused all other people here who werent agressive.

I think that when people become mature enough to use the technology safely it will appear.

Its like giving a shotgun to a three year hold see what happens when he
Looks down the barrel and pulls the trigger? BOOM the Little three year
Olds well you know what would happen

Anyway humans arnt mature enough WE HAVE ENOUGH TRAFFIC
Accidents as Is imagine them on a cataclysmic Level With space ships
Not only would we have to worry about the people inside but also
The Materials that fall to earth That are Like meteorites then once they
Hit earth forest fire.

THEN if humans do meet up with a alien race if that alien race is
Less advanced then humans will probaly exploit them for cheap labor
And if the government refuses or if people get mad the Industrialist
Will Hide,Lie,Support puppet Politicians, and if need be cause a civil
War they already allow slave labor in china so they already have
a monetary support

THEN if humans go to other planets and have space ships think
of Terrorism Terrorism will be much more advanced you think
al queda is hard to find now? try when you have to search every
Planet in the Solar system. and then have to search under ground.

HUMANS CANT HANDLE THE TECHNOLOGY IF WE GET IT WE WILL ALL DIE.

OK 1 you would never know what hit you.

2 becuse the universe some how formed it self into a disk like shape with every planetary system conforming to the disk shape, all systems then form into a bigger disk, so if you alighn you star ship with your planitary disk and all outher species do too then all species would then be all alighned pefectly upright like you see in the show.

3 Star Fleet headquarters is in San Francisco, it is then safe to asume that the universal translators were invented there. and becuse of that it is very safe to asume the origanle inventors put there acents into it, becuse no person thinks they have an acent, only everybody else dose. My teachers from Briton, He wonders why americans have such strong acents, well we wonder the same about him.
