Anyone who like the Garak character from DS9 should read this book. It sheds a lot of light on his past activities while still leaving him mysterious. I enjoyed it a lot.

does the new information about garak branch off from things he said in the series, or just where the author wanted to take him?
and is it him doing stuff in the past, or talk about what he did in the past?

Its written ENTIRELY by the actor who played Garak. That means that this is the backstory the actor was working from in his portrayal of the character.
It takes place shortly after What You Leave Behind, but the majority of the book takes the form of a letter from Garak to Bashir regarding his past activities.
Its EXCELLENT.
