Warp Speed is pretty hard to explain since there are so many desprencies shown in the series.

Did you know Qo'nos is closer to Earth than the nearest star??????
At least, according to the numbers in "Broken Bow".
All I know for sure is that Warp 9.9 is approximately 1000c, where c is the speed of light.

warp speed... the problem to faster than light speed
the faster you go, the heavier you are, the heavier you are, the more fuel you need, the heavier you get (cuz you are carriing more fuel) <-- visious circle!!
in theory the closer you get to the speed of light the heavier you get - when you reach light speed you are infinitely heavy! (ack, talk about needing a weightloss program)
now to get around that the producers created "warp" speed - where they use a warp bubble to warp space making the ship lighter or changing the physics of space in the warp bubble - i don't remember much more (or don't know it) but thats the jist of it

nice... but if you follow E=MC2 than you know it is hard to go that fast.

I saw an old TNG episode with the Q where the warp field was extended beyond the ship and completely around a falling moon. It dropped its mass to the point that the Enterprise could tractor it back into normal orbit.

Warp speed is something that can get u from star system to star system fast, it is like the speed of light almost.

At maximum impulse it would take you about a year to travel 1 lightyear, thats gotta be bad for exploration. Well I dont know about the getting heavier thing but travelling at warp speeds would splat u against the wall, but thats why they have inerctial dampners...

might help to know that the warp speed charts are logarithms... just thought I would throw that out... so...
warp 1 is the speed of light
warp 2 is 10 x the speed of light
warp 3 is 100 x the speed of light
ect....
