Lindley is right about when they first appear.

The Pah-wraiths were energy based life forms which inhabited the wormhole (Celestial Temple). They came to believe that the Prophets interfering with Bajoran culture was wrong and eventually believed themselves to be the true gods of the Celestial Temple. After warring with the prophets, the Pah-wraiths were cast out of the Temple and into the firecaves of Bajor nearly thirty thousand years before the DS9 timeling began. Kosst Amojan was the only one imprisoned elsewhere (within a carving) at B'hala. The carving wasdiscovered and damaged on the station, releasing Kosst Amojan which then inhabited Jake Sisko. A prophet inhabited Kira Nerys and the Reckoning, a conflict prophecied by Shabren, ensued but was cut short by Kai Winn because of her lack of faith. Later, Kosst Amojan used Kai Winn and Gul Dukat to free the rest of the Pah-wraiths, but Captain Sisko stopped them and permanently imprisoned the Pah-wraiths within the firecaves (sacrificing his own life to do so...maybe?).
