PostTue Sep 08, 2009 11:46 am    Is Star Trek (T.V. wise) dead?

I don't know if and when this new series called Star Trek: Cardinal is going to air. I've been reading up on this supposedly up-and-coming Star Trek series and - I've got to tell ya - it doesn't sound very promising.
From what I have read about the ST Cardinal storyline it sounds more and more like a stale, politically ventured Space Opera.

Star Trek Voyager introduced quite a number of different interesting things in it's 7 years of travel in the Delta Quadrant. Personally, I felt very empty and let down with the final Voyager (Endgame) episode and then having to read the novels just to get an idea of things went when Voyager made it back home. I guess it too late to cry over spilled milk but there was at least another 2 years of writing that could have be written for the Voyager series to remain a very interesting series. I can't believe the Star Trek Franchise and the producers of the show basically coincided Voyager's return home with the end of the series when there was a multitude of other things to keep the series going well for quite a while.

Then came Star Trek: Enterprise. That series must have been the swan-song of Star Trek Franchise - or something. In my opinion only one espisode of that series was worth watching: Regeneration. Most of the other episodes were not very palatible at all. The series as a whole was downright horrible.

This new Star Trek Cardinal doesn't sound very palatible either. Doesn't sound like there is going to be very much (if any) hold-over of characters and ideas from the Voyager series. The only one they've eluded to so far is Naomi Wildman. Big deal. What about the Borg? Species 8472? Trans Warp or Quantum Slipstream? The Delta Quadrant? Or how about travel outside of the Galaxy?

If I didn't know any better - I'd say Star Trek was dead alright.

I hadn't heard of STC at all, which is rather sad. I used to be into Trek so much more than I am now. I just read the synopsis at http://www.startrekcardinal.com/, and think I'll withold judgement until seeing it, if that happens. (another article stated CBS may be picking it up?) It certainly doesn't jump out and grab you, though. I'm hoping for something similar to DS9, which IMO, was far superior to any other Trek, except TOS. (I'm sentimental, ) I'm hoping that if picked up, this show can do something about bringing in a fresh audience.

I couldn't bring myself to watch very many episodes of the DS9 series. IMO the DS9 series was likened to a politically ventured Space Opera as well.

I liked ST Voyager a great deal. To me it was more akin to TOS; being out there in unknown territory, 70,000 light years from home, and such. But, what really made Voyager ultimately interesting (especially the last 4 seasons) was Voyager's encounters with the Borg which IMO were pretty close to being hightlights of the series.

TNG was a very good series too. I didn't miss an episode.

Of course I enjoyed TOS as well. Before I got into computers and the internet, was always look out for re-runs of TOS. Fancast.com has them all on their website.

Youtube used to have all of the TNG episodes but now there aren't very many left to watch anymore. Maybe just a small handful (if any) of DS9 episodes left on Youtube. All but 20 Voyager episodes on Youtube...just finished watching the last episode (Endgame) about a week ago, then on to the Homecoming and The Farther Shore novels.

For the most part, I couldn't stand TNG. I can't point to anything specific in the series that bothered me, though. I love DS9. It got... different at times, but it was the best at character development, IMO. I like drama and cliffhangers and people who can admit they're wrong. And also a show that doesn't show everything in black and white.
Janeway's know-it-all, "I'm always right" attitude got old fast for me. She also came across as pretty judgemental with A LOT of double standards. Example, "all Kazon are bad, but some Borg can be good." Seriously?

i agree with theresa TNG wasnt very fun to watch, not enought action and as for Voyager,it just get on my nerve sometime i would like this series to be more like DS9.i still have to agree that it would be pretty cool to know what happenned with the borg and Species 8472,but for the rest i would prefer if it would be like DS9

http://www.startrekcardinal.com/ has the feel of a fan site. But after some digging around it looks like its a real show that might happen, if the ship is the one off http://www.startrekcardinal.com/ it would be a different approach than the "normal" looking ST ships of the ages.

There's a lot of things to consider with this new trek show. The setting, ST:E for instance, being set before ST:TOS was not something i was terribly fond of Although given the ships design on the website, it looks like it would be set sometime after voyager, which then introduces the problem of the what kinda conflict to invoke without revisiting to much TOS, VOY,DS9,ENT, TNG,

you could say have the whole series envelop an all out war with a new threat or something? but i dont know....

Also, i cant remember where the borg entirely wiped out after voy? or was it just most of them?

Star Trek has many places for potential in a series. This Star Trek Cardinal sounds like a fan fiction writers attempt at creating their own series in the Trek universe rather than a real CBS paramount attempt at reviving the Trek Franchise. However after the success of the Star Trek prequel movie, I think it shows that Trek is not really dead, it was just in the hands of a group of people that let it grow stale and not change with the times. I noticed many times throughout ENT and VOY that many story lines from earlier episodes seemed to be repeated. I think if they start from Scratch like TNG did and depart from the past completely and go in another direction like VOY did then they can really create something worth watching. But no Trek is not dead, it is simply in hibernation waiting on someone to take the helm that can give us something we have not seen yet.

I think that television in general has changed so much over the past five years. The thing these days is "reality" shows, which are extremely cheap to produce. It would take a fantastic pitch with great characters and a compelling storyline for a network to take on a new Trek series. I hope it happens, though!

If they continue on the path they have taken so far, yes.
Too much, too quickly after each other.

And they are stuck on the same mantra. Prequel after prequel.

Quite frankly, they have done a very poor job in maintaining interest. If people are willing to get into a fight over who would win in Borg vs Dominion, how can you get people to lose interest?

Given JJ Abrams of Lost fame was at the helm for the movie, I wonder if he might have any thoughts/involvment to a TV series as well as the film series. Given that there is also a different timeline running thanks to the movie, there is a whole new potential out there for other things to try.

I didn't even know about a possible new series. What are the details? As for Voyager: I had always hoped they would do a miniseries about Voyager after they got home, or maybe a made-for-tv movie? I mean, Stargate: SG1 got two movies, and Battlestar Galactica had their movies made.... But, back to Voyager. "Endgame" was good for me, but it ended slightly too quickly. At the very least, I would have like to have seen what happened after they landed and the Maquis and Seven of Nine got off the ship.

As for Enterprise, I thought it was a good series overall, with some really great episodes: "Terra Nova", "Oasis", "Shockwave (pts 1 & 2 )", "Carbon Creek", "Vanishing Point", "Regeneration" (of course), "First Flight", "The Expanse", "Twilight", "North Star", "Similitude", "Carpenter Street", "Doctor's Orders", "E2","Zero Hour", "Storm Front (pts 1 & 2)", "Home", "Divergence", "In A Mirror, Darkly (pts 1 & 2)", "Terra Prime", "These Are The Voyages". That finale' was especially nice.

I don't think that the Star Trek franchise is dead. Star Trek will only die when people stop caring about it. When they stop caring about their own futures really, and I don't think that's happened just yet. Just take a look at this forum and you can see what I mean....

Getting back to this possible new series.... It would be nice to see more of Starfleet's timeships (try saying that ten times fast) like in the Voyager episode "Relativity". They could probably build a whole series based on a timeship and their experiences with the temporal prime directive. Any thoughts on that?

I've been following the whole Cardinal thing since I saw them at the Vegas convention. As someone who is hard to please, I was actually really impressed with the idea, the layout and the characters. I have a few issues, but I'm sure no matter what they did I'd have issues. I think my biggest problem is that this is being billed as some kind of fan series brought to life; as if this is a grassroots movement indipendent of Hollywood and therefore not subject to its medling. The sad truth is that the people running it are real writers and directors, and frankly I don't trust anyone on the inside with Star Trek. I'd rather a real fan movement got a series on the air.

But hey, we live in the real world, and I know that's unlikely. From what I've seen of this thing and especially with the other hair-brained ideas out there, this is by far the best.

I would suggest to the Star Trek people that a new series should be set far away in the future. Like the time of Enterprise J when they can travel to other Galaxies. Or just before humanity evolves beyond the Q.
Such a leap in time would give much more freedom and not danger canon.

Personally, I believe VOY should be extended, into a film maybe. I was not satisfied with the ending nor the book. If this cannot be done.. a new series!

I was disappointed with finding out what Cardinal was.. the storylines okay, but I seriously thought it was going to be a proper show, not some fanfic writers desperately trying to make a breakthrough.

WE NEED A NEW SERIES. Bigger, better, and more original. I was disappointed with the fact that Cardinal had an EMH too. Please! The Doctor on VOY was the one and only.. as he'd say; "I'm a hologram, not a copy machine!"

(I posted this on a thread by accident).

He may have been "the one and only," but he could've easily appeared on the Cardinal just as he did on the U.S.S. Enterprise-D (or E I forget) under Captain Picard...so it's not totally impossible, but he definately was unique , even though he wasn't the only medical hologram ever made...Doctor Zimmerman himself said so in that one VOY episode that I forget what it's called lol

Ah, I know! But the Doctor was himself. He was more than a Hologram. He was so close to humanity, despite being made of electrons.

Well in fairness, he's basicly just another piece of technology on cardinal, not really a character. From what I can tell, he looks more like the voice of the computer than a character.
