Enterprise's Problem

I have seen every episode of the first four series. I have all the dvds of all the seasons. However, i didnt watch Enterprise when it started, and the couple times i tried to watch, i never finished them. However, i recently purchased them all, and ive started watching them all. Im just finished with the first season, and i think i know what its problem is.

Number One is that it is just not that exciting of a show, and it takes itself too seriously. (too much emphasis is put on how this is the first time for everything) Second, there is enough light hearted humor, and the actors struggle when humor is attempted. But most of all, unlike TNG, DS9, and VOY, there are no sub-plots. Almost every episode focuses on the main conflict, and nothing else. This makes the episodes drag a little. With that said, you will all be glad to know that im finally hooked on all of the series of star trek.

I think you make some good points cobra but I am not sure that they are not the only flaws it had.

With all due respect to the actors who formed the ensemble cast of regulars for Enterprise only Scott Bakula and John Billingsley showed even the slightest glimpse of being able to act satisfactorily.

A character or a cast are only as good as the performances given. It says alot when the guest stars like Jeffery Combs, Susie Plakson and others way way overshadow the regulars in every scene the guests have.

The ensemble casts in TNG and Voyager were full of creative and high quality acting and when adding people like John De Lancie, Armin Shimmerman, all the Klingon charcters like Lursa and Betor and Gowron plus people like Kurtwood Smith and Jason Alexander in Voyager you get some great scenes in terrific episodes.

The daddy of all the series concerning the acting performances though is DS9.

With the best ensemble cast of the whole number of series, plus actors like Aron Eisenberg, Max Grodenchik, John Hertzler, Marc Alaimo and of course the most outstanding semi regular ever in Andrew Robinson you have a well rounded and quite diverse group of peformers, which equalled a great series.

Most of the points you made were correct but you still need the performances to be of a high standard for people to believe something they know is not real.

I find it difficult to compare Enterprise with the previous series. Because after seen the first season I had a global good feeling about it. Some of the episodes had good stories, of course you can become technical about plots en subplots but that was nog exactly somthing that bodderd me.
And yes some of the actors could do better, but on the other hand, I liked the special effects and also start having affection for the schip.

Like any show and any child Enterprise had to find its place in this world. It eventually did but not fast enough. The market closed in on it before it could cut a niche for itself like the other series.
