Ah, see, with the safeties off, then yes, they would have to go to Sick Bay to get a healing. But even with them off, and they left the holodeck, the piece of glass would disappear because it is purely holographic.

I honestly, no matter what is said, believe that the holodeck is NOT a replicator. Because if it were, they could have EASILY just used the holodeck for meal time and used a considerable less amount of energy to feed the crew and not have to deal with Neelix's cooking. And Tom wouldn't have had to use 2 weeks of replicator rations to make the locket for Kes in "Twisted," Season 2. So that's why I solely believe it's nothing more than just a projection that cannot be projected outside of the holodeck. It just would be dumb. Yes, the holodeck uses a lot of power, but it would use less power to just go to the holodeck and have the computer make something, deactivate the safeties and then just walk off the deck with something real. Using less power than the replicator system. Makes no sense to me...

Indeed, I see your point quite clearly and come to the same conclusion as you have. Otherwise as you state, it makes no sense.

Are you sure the replicators use more power?

They use more power, yes, but they also utilize another power source.

Are we sure they don't use the Holodeck during mealtime?

I remember the crew of Voyager used to go to this bar in the holodeck. Why bother going there if you can't drink? I mean, you would have to leave the holodeck to get something to drink or eat or esle you would starve or dehydrate. Hardly a good way of thinking the you are actually in a bar.

Besides, the mess hall is a lot more practical then using the holodeck for breakfast and lunch as the holodeck are used for other thing as well, as well a it probably uses a lot more power.

Neelix is just there as people would want something else then replicated food, maybe something they never heard off. Can hardly ask the replicator to make something for you while you don't know what its called.

Don't forget they got limited time with the holodeck as well.

Quite confident they didn't...

To have a good time. Why else do people go to most places in the first place? And if you let yourself starve or dehydrate JUST because you're on the holodeck, then you're just stupid. LOL...Not to mention that they're probably only gonna be there for about an hour or so. You mean to tell me you haven't ever gone somewhere and done something for a little over an hour without a drink or food? Same concept.

Well, with the safetys off, the glass wouldn't even pucture the skin, so you wouldn't have to exit to make it disapear.

I think you meant with the safeties ON, not off. LOL...otherwise if the safeties were off, then the glass WOULD puncture the skin, requiring treatment from the Doctor. And if there were glass lodged in the wound, then as they left the holodeck the glass would disappear, but still require treatment.

I'd be willing to bet they'd require alot FASTER treatment at that point.
Without the glass there to plug the hole, it would... start bleeding alot faster.

Depends on a few things like how deep the wound is, if the glass cut an artery or a vein, if the glass was compressing on an artery or a vein, the temperature difference between the holodeck and the hallway...there's a million different factors there. lol...didn't meant to spoil the fun there. lol

Well, on top of a lot of different factors, he's assuming that it's a MAJOR problem...I was just merely referring to a small simple cut. Nothing more...but that would also fall under what you said of "Different factors." LOL

PostSat Jul 11, 2009 11:06 am    Resequenced Photons

http://sfdebris.com/enterprise/e105.asp

I'm not sure you guys swing this way, but in Enterprise, the function of a holodeck is described as "resequenced photons," which, through their various energetic properties, also incline the senses to 'believe' that they are actually there.

Photons won't give you heartburn... will they?

Then again, since this was supposedly early on in the history, they've since switched to EM-bubbles and such, for energy-reasons, or realism, or whatever.
