PostMon May 11, 2009 10:40 pm    Star Trek vs. Star Wars

Greetings friends of STV! I was looking around on YouTube the other day and found this hilarious video of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D destroying the Death Star from Star Wars so I shared it on Facebook...low and behold this sparked a huge debate, one of which I wasn't expecting, lol...so I got to thinking and after talking it over with T, I decided to post a very similar debate topic here on STV. Perhaps it was the interest in the new movie, perhaps it was just the trekker in me coming to defend my series after the first Star Wars related bashing of Trek comment, who knows. But anyone...lets start the debating!

((T and I decided that either SciFi, Fantasy, and Drama or Chit-Chat would be an appropriate place to post such a debate topic...if someone else feels otherwise, feel free to move it to the appropriate area.))

I'm confused, what is the debate? Which do people think is better?

I love both, to be honest. Each have strengths and weaknesses. I never understood why there is a divide. Both are great movies!

Some have said this new movie was more like a Star Wars prequel, then it was one of the originals.

Sorry bout that Founder...yes...the debate started out being whether or not the Death Star could destroy the Enterprise...but then it did turn into which is better...my mistake for not clearing that up early.

No problem. Thanks for the clarification.

What are your feelings on it? Do you like both or defend Trek/Wars more?

Truth be told Founder, I do like both, but I tend to defend Trek more. I'll try to post some examples of this debate from facebook after work later, but for now, I am off to work...yipee LOL

Ok, so here is how the debate got started...it started out being, could the Enterprise actually destroy the Death Star...the following are the arguments :

Quote:
That would never happen. The Death Star was only weak to small fighters because the designers thought they didn't pose a threat. No way would Enterprise even get close to the trench. Plus the Death Star used Square D technology.

Quote:
so your telling me the death star could happen? that thing was almost 100 miles across. at least the technology on star trek is plausible. they say the idea of cell phones comes from the communicators from the original star trek. star wars is a sci-fi/fantasy movie with magic (the force) and glowing sticks that has no where else to go movie-wise. star trek is on going series that inspires the young minds of today to dream the dream of dreams.

Nerd sense is tingling. Look what you started.

I'm not saying that it is or isn't believable, the point is that in Death Star vs. Enterprise, Enterprise has no chance. The Death Star could blow up a freaking planet. It would be even worse if the fight was against Death Star 2 when they were able to use the superlaser on capital ships.

Find Enterprise on here and then imagine something a billion times bigger. Yeah, that's the Death Star.... Read More

Then it escalated from that to which show was better because it was more believeable or not, and here's those arguments :

Quote:
Hey, there was a documentary thing on History Channel about the technology of Star Wars and how science is catching up to some of it, it's not like none of it is at all possible. http://www.history.com/content/starwarslegacy/star-wars-tech

This one was my reply - I'm afraid Dan is right, NOTHING in Star Wars is possible, nothing! And almost everything in Trek is possible and plausible at some point in the future or past, i.e. communicators & cellphones and the fact that even holodeck technology is being worked towards to this day! Ah yes, and to Mr. Johnson's comment...does the Death Star have warp ... Read Morecapability, does it have shields, torpedos, maybe phasers? No, just one giant laser that can point in one direction, and blow up a planet IF it even hits it's target. The Enterprise on the other hand has all of those things that I just mentioned, plus a crew that could easily out manuever the death star while they were blindfolded. Plus, who says Enterprise even needs to get in the trench? All she has to do is get close enough, no prob whatsoever, lock onto her target, the death star 1 & 2's weakspot (how obvious btw), and then fire her torpedos...then just like in the video...bye bye death star ! ((FYI, Dan & Mr. Johnson aka Brock, are my two buddies that helped start this whole debate))
Quote:
well if we're talking about that YouTube video that's all a matter of opinion since it's all just cuts of both the shows. if that's what we're arguing about, the death star's main laser could only be used on very large, slow objects... like a planet. a ship like the enterprise could move out of harms way with plenty of time to spare to launch a few photon torpedoes and leave some damage after the phaser barrage. and even the small turrets that were defending off from the x-wings really aren't no match for the enterprises shields. using a computer to lock on to thoses buggers and take them out with one shot.

the larger they are the harder they fall.

like...what? i at least gave you an example of what i know. your link just tells me History Channel is doing a show about Star Wars...wooo! Don't forget other technology like transporters, replicators, , Cortical stimulator, EMH, Hypospray, Medical tricorder and universal translators.

And so that is how this whole debate about which is better, what could or couldn't happen got started altogether...what do you guys think?
