The warp drive, one of Star Trek's hallmark inventions, could someday become science instead of science fiction.

Some physicists say the faster-than-light travel technology may one day enable humans to jet between stars for weekend getaways. Clearly it won't be an easy task. The science is complex, but not strictly impossible, according to some researchers studying how to make it happen.

The trick seems to be to find some other means of propulsion besides rockets, which would never be able to accelerate a ship to velocities faster than that of light, the fundamental speed limit set by Einstein's General Relativity.

I think that would be totally awesome! Too bad it is not likely to happen in our time and it is more likely to be long after we are gone , ah well...constantly gazing at the stars each night and dreaming of trek is good enough for me I guess, lol!

Haha good point. It looks like our descendents will be in SF, not us.

Yup...all we'll likely be doing is dreaming / fantasizing about SF, much like I usually do, lol !

It's kind of funny if you think about it. Many of the scientific inventions that have come around, and many that are being worked on now, have come about because of Star Trek. Just seeing the cool things that they have and do has driven scientists to want to duplicate it.
