Countdown comics?

Anyways, even my friend who doesn't like Trek says that the movie looks pretty good.

Countdown is the name given to a four issue comic book series that takes place "before" (I say before for certain reasons) the new movie. It serves as a prequel of the sorts to the movie, tying in the TNG Era (Which is also used loosely) to what we'll see in the movie. Word has it (and I can testify that this is true) that the comics are to show Nero's character more in depth and explain his reasons for his actions in the movie.

Spoiler wrote:
The final issue will end in a cliffhanger, which the movie will supposedly resolve. IE, it continues onwards where the comics will end.

I hope this helps for anyone who was not aware of what these comics were, or what their purpose is.

Yeah, I know a few people who aren't into Trek who want to see this, as well.

An interesting piece of news, this past Monday night, Star Trek was unexpectedly aired at the Alamo Draughthouse Theater in Austin, Texas in a showing which fans expected to see Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn, and a ten minute preview of the new movie. The movie is said to be receiving many positive reviews by those that have seen it.

Did they do that on purpose to see how people would respond to the movie or was it a mistake?

That was probably on purpose, to gain excitement about the movie, and to see how the audience would respond. It's good marketing, tell people they are getting a ten minute preview and then suddenly they are treated to the entire movie, a month before the rest of the country, hell the rest of the world (save for the Gala) gets to.

The countdown comics are REALLY good imho, the artwork and story, everything, and explains quite a bit of backstory,so i highly recommend it too to anyone going to see the movie next month.

It also explains things from the second trailer, which makes you go "hmm......wait so that was what..woah,NOW i understand what that is!" etc XD

If anyone wants some sample spoiler sneak peak pages,PM me

Greetings, folks!

So I've been reading up a bit on the new movie and am becoming pretty excited about it, but my skepticism still exists, especially reading an interview with the film's Bob Orci about the fact that the new movie apparently messes with the timeline. Here's the interview:

http://trekmovie.com/2008/12/11/bob-orci-explains-how-the-new-star-trek-movie-fits-with-trek-canon-and-real-science/

They don't really go into detail about the film's plot and stuff, so there aren't more than a couple spoilers on there if you want to check it out.

What does everyone think about the idea of messing with the timeline, intentionally, as part of a parallel universe?

I think it's brilliant. That way, the original continuity exists and a new one is made that allows them to fool around with the timeline.

Good point. I'm on the fence about this, so I'd like to hear more thoughts, but the simple fact is that, indeed, if they want to do different things that would mess with the timeline, this is the only way to prevent it from doing so and, perhaps, if they want, relaunch Star Trek as a parallel universe or something along those lines to keep the franchise going, up-to-date with technology and other realistic things.

But at the same time, isn't that making it less Trek? I don't know...

It's not less Trek, it's NEW Trek. It has the same heroes, same ships, same species, just new adventures.

Trek was dying and it needed to go back to the basics. Kirk, Spock, and the Enterprise.

I figure the old story line, the one we're used to, continues on in Trek Online.

Fair enough. But I still wish they weren't going back to those guys and were instead moving forward! lol.

lol, yeah. Usually, we'd love for new Trek. But I think the franchise needed to be ressurected and a new, crew with names we never knew might not be enough to draw in fans.

Blame Nemesis.

I'm on the fence to, but at least with a new timeline, they can do whatever they want and the 'old' (for lack of better term) timeline isn't effected much (if at all). I think in someways it's a good idea, that way if something happens ore is references doesn't mesh with what we already know, we don't have to worry about somehow making sense of it.

I was initially skeptical about this film, but looking at all the reviews, trailers, and clips, I've become very excited. My thing is, as long as it feels like Trek and the actors get their respective characters right, I'll be happy. The theater here is starting to show it tomorrow night, so after class I'll be on my way to get my Trek on!

And so I ask you, what do you think this parallel universe stuff does to the whole temporal paradox deal and the fact that, in a number of Trek episodes and even Trek IV, the heroes go back in time to prevent something from happening to save the future, and then they return back to the present as though they had just left...And the questions folks ask, like in Voyager, about temporal paradoxes? That's the one thing I'm unsure about here in terms of the actual established continuity of Trek, despite what Orci says.

What say you?

I think it makes the idea of time travel pretty messy in Trek, but I understand why the writers did it...

I just finished reading Countdown. Part of it seems like it was taken from RPG, like DSG with the Nautolian War, lol, and part of it seemed like a rehashing of Nemesis with the Remans/Romulans as the villains and an ultra-powerful starship commanded by a renegade. Nevertheless, overall, I liked it a good deal and it has me excited and ready in anticipation for the movie tomorrow...Looking forward to it!

Just got home from seeing it.

Oh my goodness! It's amazing! So funny and brilliant and true to the original series, while still taking it in a new direction. I loved it, and will be going to see it again
