PostSun Apr 19, 2009 11:58 pm    Runaway Train - your thoughts...

So last Aug I choreographed a dance to the song "Runaway Train" by Soul Asylum with my best friend Carisa. My favorite style is ballet and hers is jazz, so we combined our two favorite things and created a dance out of it.

Now we completely dissected the lyrics and music video from Runaway Train and created our interpretation of the song thru dance. We portray one single person, but two parts of that one person - the "good, smart choices, positive" side (me and my ballet dancers - and we're dressed in the white), and the "bad, dark, mislead, disturbed" side (Carisa and her jazz dancers in the maroon).

The song is kinda about an inner battle within one's self where eventually the bad overcomes the goodness inside that person. They end up going down the "wrong track" making bad choices and losing whatever inner battle they were fighting. Sad song really.

Anyway, the lead singer of Soul Asylum wasn't able to make it to our performance, but he was shown a DVD of our dance, and apparently it brought him to tears!! I just thought that was kind of cool !!!

Here's the video of our dance. Carisa and I are front and center. Let me know what you all think: http://www.vimeo.com/4235298

Awesome! Great job, Allie!

Must have been almost as hard to choreograph as it was to actually do,

nah - choreographing it wasn't all that hard. It was a lot of fun actually. It was INSANE b/c Carisa and I kept coming up with super similar ideas at the exact same time - it was kinda of scary. When you're working with someone else, it's a lot of fun... especially my best friend!

Dancing it wasn't that difficult either. It was one of my most favorite dances i've done on stage - and note i've done a LOT!

Teaching it however to the other dancers... There were times Carisa and I wanted to pull all our hair out. We were working with the most advanced dancers of the bunch, and at times they were dumb as rocks!!! Completely clueless!! We were like "Are you kidding us!!!??? What is wrong with you all??" I was of course nice about it b/c I didn't want to yell, so Carisa took the liberty of doing that for the both of us!
Despite it all though, we were very happy how it all turned out.
