Just a poll to see if anyone actually likes Deanna Troi, she repetitvely tries to state the obvious, "He's upset" yes he was crying and she has a passion for crashing the enterprise. But then again she is rather fabulous as well and she is the subject of many really good episodes.

I don't get why shes a commander. That episode where she became one just kills me. Also, when she lost her ability to sense emotions...that was annoying too. Other than that shes not too bad.

Gawd... the sentiment is felt!

I was so happy in Season 6, i forget the exact episode(i think it was chain of command) where Starfleet ordered Picard on a clandestine operation depp into Cadassian territory.

The officer assigned to captain the enterprise was a spectale. I believe he had her in uniform, for once!

I dont understand my fault with her... i just know there's something despicable about her personality.

I actually liked Deanna. I suppose I liked her more because of reading the "Imzadi" books, but really... she didn't bother me. I'll admit she was a strange addition, the way she was the one with answers all the time, but eh, she was an empath. I'm kind of a fan of Betazoids to begin with.

I quite liked Deanna Troi, her character was quite respectable and very much a team player...all the traits I look for in a great character !

I like Deanna Troi. Its a shame they made her half human though meaning she was empathic rather than telepathic. It would have been much better if she was a telepath like Talia and Leeta from Babylon 5

well, she does show certain telepathic abilities doesn't she? i remember in perhaps the very first episode when she and Riker met for the first time on the enterprise she spoke to him via telepathy (about their past romantic involvement or something). and also she's able to speak telepathically with her mother (although maybe that's just her mother reading her thoughts).

personally, i think it's interesting to have an empath on the crew. it's also interesting that there's actually a counselor position on the bridge.

the simple addition of Troi to the senior staff presents a very unique command structure aboard the Enterprise and demonstrates a rather progressive attitude regarding the operation of a Federation starship. the fact that there is a counselor position which is deeply involved in the day to day operations of the ship and consulted regarding command-level decisions tells us that Starfleet command places great importance on the mental health and social dynamics of the crew.

although Starfleet retains, for the most part, a military-styled command and organizational structure, its primary mission is still exploration. the crew is subjected to the psychosocial effects of space travel, such as extreme isolation and close-quarter contact for extended periods of time. interacting with alien species can also be a delicate matter, one in which the crew is likely to encounter strange social environments. so it absolutely makes sense that Troi, an empath, would be a deeply valued member of the crew.

IMO its these small but thoughtful details that make the Star Trek universe so realistic.

^ Actually, what you're talking about was explained in the Imzadi books. Riker is the only person she can speak with telepathically, because she's connected to him so deeply. They spent many weeks together on Betazed playing with that ability. More than a romantic partner, he was truly Imzadi.

ah... so that's what they were referring to. i didn't recognize that word when i first read your post.

Imzadi roughly translates to "beloved" right? i'm just wondering what's the nature of the Imzadi novel because you say it's more than just a romantic partnership.

btw, i took you up on the DS9 recommendation you made to me a long time ago. and i'm very glad that i did. right now i'm on S02E12 of DS9 and S04E20 of TNG. it's interesting to watch the two in parallel, especially when there are crossovers or references in DS9 back to events from TNG.

I'm doing the same thing right now. I also did it when I first watched the two stargate series on dvd. Its definently the way to go.

Pretty much from the stuff that Arellia said, I did like her. I thought she was great in First Contact, and she had proven herself in several TNG episodes thats she is capable of so much more then handing someone a tissue to cry into.

It does translate roughly to "beloved," but it's a lot more than that. Riker was really her true love, what humans would call soulmates. When a betazoid meets their soulmate the connection is very deep. Riker went through a lot learning the way betazoids behave, and getting in touch with Deanna on a more psychic level. At one point Deanna was nearly killed, and Riker ended up in the middle of the betazoid jungle trying to save her. The brief mentions of their history is really fleshed out in books--technically books are not "canon," but I really think the explanations in these particular books are very important.

She is one of my favorite characters. I don't really know exactly why, I can't explain it, but I'm oddly drawn to her character.

Having a counsellor on the bridge and on the senior staff isnt necisarily the way of starfleet but more the way of Captain Picard. He has quite a close relationship with deanna and sees how usefully she can be to him. If she was a human counsellor and on another star ship then she wouldn't have a place on the bridge or on the command staff. (thats why we dont see her in her starfleet uniform much on the bridge)

I think shes brilliant. Definatley one of my favorite characters in TNG and shes quite a capable actress.

One of my favorite deanna quotes: "Chocolate is a very serious thing"

Personally, I think TNG could have done without her. Don't get me wrong, i'm sure her heart was in the right place and the idea of her character was interesting, but her overly intense sincerity and stupid accent bugged the hell out of me.

I couldn't stand Troi, with her eyes in the nothing, saying: pain...suffering... I didn't find her too attractive either, I liked Beverly more. Just a personal opinion.

*remembers encounter at farpoint* XD

I liked her,i mean, there might have been some annoying things about her to some people but its like Wesley,a lot of people want to strangle him,but TNG wouldnt be the same without him in those eps to poke fun at.And she`s a good source of (maybe unintentional) humor between friends (woman pilot crashing the enterprise, hurr) and if someone makes a comment being all good naturedly "THANKYOU councelor obvious!" and lets not forget she IS the godess of Empathy

She`s part of trek lore and Canon and i think without her on the bridge something would have been missing. It would make sense having some sort of empath on the bridge especially when doing lots of exploring to strange new worlds and races ;/

PostThu Jul 23, 2009 8:13 pm    A Troi for you, a Troi for me

The first season of STNG had a pretty annoying and useless Troi but even then I could sense potential. It took her the entire series to develope but she seemed to accomplish that with every new outfit. By the end of the series I think she progressed more in personality and development than any other character. The Child, Menage `a Troi and Dark Page were just all great episodes that focused on Troi.

She was a nice addition to the crew in the series, but not really super. But when it came to the movies (especially in "First Contact" where she's very drunk with Zefram Cochrane) Troi was an excellent character.

Some of my favorite instances where Troi is featured are actually in the Star Trek: Voyager (season 6) episodes "Pathfinder" and "Life Line". Oh, and I just watched the Enterprise finale' "These Are The Voyages", and she had a nice cameo in that as well.
