Best Season of "Stargate SG1"...

It is peculiar that an average sci-fi adventure movie from way, way back in 1994 was successfully adapted into a overly long running, inexorably formulaic, yet surprisingly watchable and likable TV series (like Voyager ). But at what point in it's decade long existence was Stargate SG-1 at it's very best? In my mind the high point of this show was towards the end of the slightly patchy Season One, up until around Season Four to Five (I've got Season Three and Four on DVD this week).

After that, I gradually lost interest in SG-1 - but I was lucky enough to catch "Lost City" and did not mind Season Eight (even though much of the charm, wit and originality of the first four or five seasons was gone by then, despite the improved production values and bigger space battles).

But what was the best all round series of SG-1?

Stargate really came into its own in season 4, for me. The first three seasons had excellent stories, but season 4 was when the Stargate universe really took shape and came to the front of our minds.

The best season, however, would have to be 7. Season 6 had expanded the scope of the series; the first five seasons were great, but they focused more on the protection of Earth than the galaxy. With the introduction of Anubis, the stakes became much greater. However, I didn't like Jonas, so Daniel's return and the subsequent events leading up to Anubis' "defeat" really made the show shine.

I'm quite jealous of the entire Stargate concept from a plot device point of view, though, which is why even though maybe it was right for the series to end, the universe definitely shouldn't. The Stargate is such a cool device for space travel that it'd be a shame to let it lapse.

I actually thought Seasons Two and Three were SG-1's golden period - it was still a strong series from Season Four to Eight, but the earlier seasons were generally better, the cast were fresher and SG-1 hadn't taken itself too seriously yet. Season Three is the high point, but I really enjoyed Season Four on DVD.

But there are so many damn good episodes like "Small Victories", "Upgrades", "Tangent", "The Devil You Know", "Deadman's Switch", "Exodus", "Scorched Earth", "Into the Fire", "Crossroads", "Forever in a Day", "Window of Opportunity", "Serpant's Venom", "Nemesis", "Absolute Power", "Fair Game", "Chain Reaction", "Pretense", "A Hundred Days", "The Curse", all very good stuff that seems much, much better than I can vaguely remember seeing on TV years ago...

I thought that I had seen most of the series. I bought the first four seasons a few months ago. So far I've watched the first three and I had not seen most of them. I think that all three seasons were amazing (excluding the two clip shows in the first two seasons).

The final season (with all the Arthurian legend stuff) is in mho the best.

After watching every episode on DVD within the last sisx months I'm going to have to say that seasons 1,2 and 7 are my favorite. Season 6 was also very good even though Daniel was absent from most of it.

The guy replacing Daniel was alright, but I liked the new Daniel (season 7+) better.

I like Jonas Quinn much better than Daniel, but Daniel seasons 7-9 was much better than Daniel seasons 1-5. Maybe Shanks took some acting lessons?

(though I do enjoy it every time Daniel "dies", just wish he'd stay that way, )

I did love Jonas, but I wouldn't want to replace jackson. I almost cried when he ascended. Plus, he was the one who figured out the whole thing. There wouldn't be a franchise without his character.
