PostTue Apr 29, 2008 5:58 am    Cat Training

I have a problem with my cats, I have had them for the last nine months now ever since i moved into my new house. My three cats are Sam, Trip, & Seven.

I cant get them to stop peeing by the front door. No matter what i try they do it everyday. As far as i know its mainly Sam the oldest that does it. Theres alway a giant puddle by the front door for my post to land in every morning. I have tried moving the litter tray by the front door (they just pee next to it) i have tried shutting them in the spare room at night with food, water and litter tray (they just pee by the door later in the day when im in the bathroom or something). I have tried leaving them out all night (again they do it later when im not looking). And when i have caught them doing it i have tried the old trick of rubbing there nose in it. NOTHING seems to work with them.

Perhaps its a territorial thing? None of the cats go out the front door, they are too scared so they alway go out the back into the garden. Plus almost every morning there is post coming through or people knocking on the door (which causes the dog to bark for the next 10 mins also)

I really dont know what to do. Its SO embarresing when i open the door in the morning and theres a puddle off cat wee right there.

Not only that but i have Vinyl wood effect floor by the front door. It has been peed on so many times that all the planks have lifted now and gone out of shape now. And now because they have lifted the pee gets under the planks meaning its alway wet, out of shape and smells now. I am going to have to replace my floor because of this and i just do NOT know how to stop my cats from doing it.

If anyone has any advise it would be greatly appreciated.

Various tricks that may or may not work;

1) Cayenne pepper by the door:
Cats NORMALLY hate the smell of Cayenne pepper, and will avoid it like the plague. This doesn't always work. I've had a cat that would not quit sucking on it's thumb. We tried cayenne pepper, hot sauce, and tiquilla, and all we got was a drunk cat, and one VERY nasty smelling kitty box.

2) Replace the floor with laminate or tile flooring:
It's not the same as it was before, and so the cats may leave it alone. At the very least, it'll be easier to clean in the morning.

3) Mint leaves:
This is a pretty durastic step. If you have to scatter mint leaves around your' front door, you've got sadistic cats. I'm not even sure this will work at that point. Cats absolutely detest the smell of mint. Leaving mint leaves scattered about the front door may discourage them from doing it, however it should be pointed out that minty cat urine is not a 'lemony fresh' smell.

I tried the pepper before and it didn't work. And its one thing to clear up cat pee when you wake up in the morning, its a completly other thing to clear up cat pee mixed with pepper.

Looks like im gonna have to try mint leaves lol. I have been working on getting the cats to go out the front too. The two males are starting to do it more but the female (seven) is still too scared.
