Pretty sad, he was a good actor. And I had no idea he was named after Heathcliff. The things you learn.

Somewhat of an update, on related news (albeit oldish), the actors that replaced Heath Ledger (Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell) have donated their entire earnings from The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus to his daughter. Apparently, he hadn't updated his will to include her, and they had some concerns for her future as a result. That's pretty amazing, to do something like that.

in a way it is. but at the same time, it makes you question our culture of nepotism.

i don't know how much each of them earned/will earn from that movie, but it's probably at least a couple million dollars, which is more than most people earn in a life-time.

so it seems kinda weird to show so much concern for one person because she was born as Heath Ledger's daughter, while they show no concern for other children with far more desperate needs.

i'm not saying that they're not great people for doing this, just that our cultural attitude towards charity/altruism/compassion is kinda skewed.

after all, most people would much rather donate money to charity and get a pat on the back, than to eliminate the societal inequalities & injustices that require such charity. lots of rich celebrities (and wealthy people in general) enjoy going to highly publicized charity events, but how many of them would support structural reforms like universal health care, progressive tax system, socialized higher education, etc.?

perhaps Plato was really on to something when he spoke about communal parenting in The Republic. if parents/grandparents didn't know who their children were, they'd be caring to all children, not just their own. in such a society, it would be inconceivable to allow 1 in 4 children to live below the poverty line--stats for American children.

A few weeks ago I saw The Dark Knight, and I realized even more that we've lost an incredible actor. The way he portrayed the Joker is amazing.
