PostWed Dec 12, 2007 3:44 pm    Vulcans compared to Christians

Ok everyone I have simple question that I need answered for a lot of extra credit for my History class.

How does the Star Trek character Spok as a Vulcan reflect the concepts evolved in Christian sexual pesimism in terms of Vulcan rashalitly and mating?

I'm a Christian. Here's what we think about sex: Don't have sex with anyoe you're not married to. That's it.

No I mean when strong pesimism toward sex started around the Roman empire. Come on I figure there are a lot of smart people on here that went to college that might have a good answer. Also you could just inform me about the vulcans and their rashanality and mating.

Well

Vulcans have a non-emotional standpoint when it comes to sex, except during the Pon Farr that occurs every seven years in an adult Vulcans Life. During the Pon Farr the Vulcans must mate, or engage in a ritual battle to the death.

So basically the sexual Pessimism commonly found in Christianity is similar in the fact that when the urge arises, its going to be met possibly with guilt afterwards.

So say that in your initial question. Don't assume that I'm unintelligent because I can't read your mind.

I think pessimism is a very tough description.

I think the logical way Vulcans engage in the act is a very understandable and expectant process from such a rational species.

I can not see any pessimism there, it is just a fact that they are able to control thier urges.

Humans are more expressive and are more likely to act on thier urges.

The "pessimism" as you termed it was not created by the leaders of the Roman Empire but the religious leaders who have equated sex with sin and evil actions so absolutely that parents are afraid to discuss the subject or even contemplate the subject intelligently with thier children.

I would hope that ther is a day when sex can be discussed in a mature and logical way but I can not see that day coming.

I acknowledge the correlation you made in your question but I really think it is like chalk and cheese, the Vulcan attitude is a very sensible one and the human/christian one is a very dictatorial/undemocratic/controlling attitude.

As for the first response to the question, that doesn't help at all.

Christians all over the world do not abide by that advice and when you include adultery and other areas what the christian believers say and what they do are totally irrelevant when discussing reality and the way the interact and react to different situations.

Sorry if I offend anyone but if I am wrong please inform me how so I can correctly change my views in the future.

I don't want to upset anyone, so I'll keep my most intimate thoughts to myself, but why would you really want to compare Vulcans to Christians?

Kinda apples and oranges IYAM...

Well, if sexual intercourse is solely for procreation, and there are no emotional attachments, then it is actually more logical to procreate with whomever is available at the time of Pon Farr.

Yes, but don't they actually have multiple mates? I'm pretty sure Tuvok didn't.

I don't think it was ever ruled out...

Mentioning one wife doesn't rule out the existence of other wives...

In Tuvok's case it does. He was adament that he not "cheat" on his wife. Tom Paris tried to make a holographic representation of his ONE wife and he felt that having sexual relations with just that hologram of his wife was improper. If he could have relations of that nature with anyone due to logic, it'd be doubtful that he would have been so bothered by the hologram.

Point taken, I was not aware of that particular episode.

The comparison is not logical.
