In obvious cases of extreme emergency it's simply a waste of time. Also, after about season 3 or so, the Doc 'outgrew' the phrase, along with much of his more basic programming.

Eh, I wouldn't quite say he outgrew it...Yes he could have chosen to stop after he outgrew his original programming, but he pretty much always said it... although like you said in cases of extreme emergency, he does cut it short and stop...

he had the chance to change his opening statement when he went to see his creator but refused because it would change the person he had become

I think the obligation to say it was probably removed from his programming...and a lot of the time he just used it as a friendly greeting, outwith medical situations.

oh and btw...

I think it is just a case of him out growing it I mean he was the only true medical officer on the ship and I think he realises that when he is called he can now simply ask the patient or the person who brings them in what happened for a more detailed and quicker response.

I don't think there wasn't a time when he doesn't say it. I think he always says it when he's activated during the day since he said he doesn't always like to stay activated for too long. So I think when they say "Computer activate the Emergency Medical Hologram" and then when he appears is when he says it. I'm pretty sure he always says it then. But there were so many episodes it's hard to say.

No, there are several times when he doesn't say it.

As to why, I think it was showing he was gaining control of his own program. When we see a person, we don't always say "Hi", but that is the norm usually. For him, the norm is saying that, but there are times when he just doesn't feel the need to.

PostMon Sep 01, 2008 5:56 pm    The doctors pathetic greeting

i actually think its funny. Especally when there was some kind of disease and there were crewmen everywhere. He was activated. " Please state the nature.....( he saw the patients) don't bother."

It was done to show he was being "personalized" being the sole doctor on the ship, he was being activated when it wasn't an emergency. Finally, himself, and the rest of the crew pretty much agreed "Please state the nature of the medical emergency" was a waste to say.
