LANSING, Mich. -- For nearly a decade, Dr. Jack Kevorkian waged a defiant campaign to help people kill themselves, prompting battles over assisted suicide in many states.

But with Kevorkian preparing to leave prison Friday after serving 8-plus years of a 10- to 25-year sentence in the death of a Michigan man, only one state, Oregon, has a law allowing physician-assisted suicide.

Good for him. I thought that it was outrageous that he was sent to prison in the first place and I think it is a shame that only Oregon, of all states, currently allows assisted suicide.

Good for him?

Kevorkian, 79, used a machine he'd invented to administer fatal drugs and dropped off bodies at emergency rooms or left them in motel rooms.

Even people who support physicians killing people must say that this was absolutely horrendous. How can one be certain a person was in a reasonable mental state so where they could properly decide for themselves they wanted to be killed? No, this man being released is not good...even if you are for assisted killing.

*Assisted suicide. Not assisted killing.

I'll admit, the way that some of the stuff that he did was kinda...stupid. But, he's vowed to stay away from assisted suicides now. I think that he's honest, too. He's so close to death that I doubt he'd want to go to jail for it, again.

And, when it comes to assisted suicide, one should definitely make sure that person wants to be put to "sleep" as it were. Some mental tests would definitely be needed.

I'm not saying Kervorkian was a super good guy. But, he is a key figure in the assisted sucide movement and I'm definitely for it. If we have the right to live, we should have the same right to death.
