PostFri May 11, 2007 4:21 pm    Jocks Joke About Raping Condi Rice & Laura Bush

Quote:
May 11, 2007 -- SHOCK jocks Opie and Anthony are in trouble again after joking about raping Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

During Wednesday's show, a guest named "Homeless Charlie" told the deejays he wanted to have sex with Rice.

Anthony Cumia interrupted to say he "could just imagine the horror on Condoleezza Rice's face when she realized that you were holding her down and f - - -ing her."

"Punching her in the f - - -ing face and f - - -ing her," added a laughing "Charlie," before saying he also wanted to force himself on First Lady Laura Bush.

This almost makes Don Imus look cute.

Political stuff isn't normally grounds for dismissal, but something as tasteless as this...do they have a history of saying crap like this?

^They have a bad history, yes.

Apparently they'll be fired half past never, from the article I read. I hope it's erroneous.

wasn't said while they were being brodcast by CBS, so they have no grounds to fire them.

since only subscribers can listen to what is said on XM, the FCC cannot control what goes on. XM can fine them or fire them, but doing that would lose them quite a large fanbase who bought the XM to listen to Them much like the Sirius boom that occured when Howard Stern moved.

Don't expect them fired anytime soon.

Well.. umm.. Rice is ugly for one... so no, that's not even funny.
Personally, after having gone through dealing with friends and family who have gone through those kind of things they were joking about, I find this distasteful, and they should be fired... there are some things not even worth joking about. That's one.

Would you be so understanding if it were your wife that people were "joking" about raping? Graphically?

There has been moves to make XM et al regulated by the FCC. It's been defeated by narrower and narrower margins each time. It's sad that people can't just be responsible for the words coming out of their own mouths.

Having been in a situation very close to that, no, trust me, no. You wouldn't be nearly as understanding. More to the point, you would likely get angry and/or violent, and more to the point, you would stop seeing the humor that certain sadistic people around here apparently see in this.

According to AOL they've been suspended for 30 days.

It's sadder that people can't be reponsible for the words going into their ears.

Grow up. Words are words. Punches are punches. The difference would shock you...apparently.

Ah yes. I'll be sure to secure myself in a room where I can only hear exactly what I choose. Because, by leaving my home, or watching any type of media, I do not have absolute choice. It's nice that you think you do, though.

You CAN change the channel, you can turn it off, there is no reason you MUST watch TV or listen to the radio, it is infact a choice.

As far as leaving your home, if you leave your house and have to deal with people saying/doing things you don't like and you're having trouble dealing with it, seek help. The rest of humanity calls it adulthood.

Words are not just words. Words have never been just words. Language has always and will continue to be the most powerful tool--and weapon--in humanity's arsenal.

That is not the issue.

There is a limit to freedom of speech, as we have seen time and again. These radio hosts crossed the line, and they should have to deal with the consequences of that action. That's adulthood.

Of course, I'm proceeding on the assumption that you think such a comment was inappropriate, just unavoidable. I could be totally misinterpreting you.

As for firing these hosts, it may be that they did not say this on CBS, but that doesn't mean CBS has to renew its contract with them. Plus, a sneaky and powerful organization like CBS is bound to have resources it can tap to make up a fictional reason to fire them.

Yes, inappropriate and malicious behaviour should indeed have very real consequences...however, to say that a 'listener/viewer' can't be held responsible for the decision to view/listen to anything is bonkers.

And yes, words are just words. The inferences made by the listener is the weapon, and the wounds are always self inflicted.

This is a bit of a farse, I'd bet the contract said/says that CBS can terminate him for a cloudy day if they so choose, they just have to pay him is all. They have no real need of sneaky-ness.

Your post is rather odd, IMO. I can control, and should, what I see on TV and hear on the radio, (though to do so, I would have to be precognitive and know something I find distasteful was coming), yet I have issues if I might find something said by another person offensive.
I find what you said to be rude, yet I did not have the choice to not read it and be able to continue discussing this issue, or doing my job as a moderator of World News.
It's too bad that things aren't as black and white as you try to make them seem, and that I could choose either A or B with no outside influence on said decisions.

BTW, I agree with HH, words are never just words. Words build, tear down, hurt, comfort, etc... Language is a living thing.
