Quote: | WASHINGTON President Bush would veto any bill drafted by House Democratic leaders that would fund the Iraq war only into the summer months, his spokesman said Wednesday. |

I've been surprised people haven't talked about this battle as much here. I think it's rather epic. This bill would fund the troops through July, and if things don't get better, gives them the chance to re-evaluate the war again. I have to wonder. How far will congress push to get the war to end? Can they even succeed? I was surprised that this latest idea is another one which is unsatisfactory to the president. Supposedly it's unlikely to pass the senate, but I'm on the edge of my seat anticipating what the final bill will look like.

They have officially passed it in the House.
Quote: | WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The House of Representatives on Thursday passed a $96 billion war spending measure, despite a veto threat from President Bush.
The bill, passed 221-205, would send the Pentagon about $40 billion up front to fund U.S. combat operations into July.
Additional funding would be dependent upon progress in the four-year-old war, based on a review of how well the Iraqi government was meeting a series of benchmarks. |

Looks like the House isn't backing down in the war over the war.

Why would Bush veto this?
I realise that the funding is only until July, but still--that's money from now until July. Isn't sending money to the army a good thing when it's fighting a war? Forty billion dollars isn't pocket change either. Take the money and worry about getting more after July in July!

It's highly unlikely according to most of the news sources that the Senate will approve this bill, so I doubt it will come to that.
