Yeah, they put us to shame with their turnout rate, though. That's the one thing the French have got going for them

That's horrible news. I was hoping for Royal to win it. And, RM, France has more than one thing up on us besides voter turnout. I'm not gonna go into detail on those things, as you wouldn't agree with any of it, but, now, with someone like Sarzoky in charge...

Apparently some people aren't too happy at the results, as the "civilized" French youth population is out and about participating in riots. Great way to show your displeasure with the results, huh?

40ish% turnout and an apathetic public too lazy to riot?

Yeah. Apparently Sarkozy made some tough remarks about them and the rioters of 2005 back in said year and they hate him for it.

I have a good friend who is a French citizen and voted in the election, I don't know much about the elections, but he said that Sarkozy isn't too fond of the Arab (or Muslim? My brain is fried right now) population, and that it may cause a lot of tension.

That's true, but the reason for this isn't because he hates Muslims or anything, but it's because of his comments in reaction to the riots that consumed France back in 2005. He was pretty tough with his rhetoric, and they're not too fond of him for it.

My impression is that electing an official who fuels this kind of tension and controversy in the population is not a good choice to lead a nation.

I disagree. I think a nation needs a guy who's not going to take crap when it comes to issues of mass riots propagated by Islamic extremism and so forth. It's about time France had a leader who'll take a tough stand against it.

And it's your opinion from the little you've heard that he's racist and bigoted. From what I've heard, which I presume is more due to your lack of knowledge about this, that's not the case.
But people can look at people different ways. For instance, people look at Tom Tancredo and say he's racist for his positions on illegal immigration. I look at him and see the exact opposite, a man who simply truly cares about this nation. I suppose French people can do the same about Sarkozy.
