PostSat May 05, 2007 2:52 pm    Cinco de Mayo: The Real Story

This is the real story of Cinco de Mayo, which is actually Sinko de Mayo, not Cinco de Mayo. It was told to me last summer by my grandpa and I looked it up again today online.

Quote:
Most people don't know that back in 1912 Hellman's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the "Titanic" was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after New York. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about the stuff, were eagerly awaiting delivery and were disconsolate at the loss. So much so that they declared a National Day of mourning which they still observe today. It is known, of course, as... Sinko de Mayo

It's clearly a joke, and a funny one at that. Certainly not meant to be taken seriously. Obviously the real holiday "commemorates the victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Segun over the French occupational forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinco_de_Mayo). (Happy Cinco de Mayo to those who celebrate it!)

Yeah, I already laughed my socks all the way off. The smiley was a good addition, by the way. Without it, the post came across a bit... characteristally neurotic,

lol, yeah, which is part of the reason why I added it. I also wasn't sure what you meant with your smilie, so I figured it might be a good idea to add it.
