KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysian doctors have declared neckties a health hazard and called on the heath ministry to stop insisting that physicians wear them.
Citing studies that show ties are unhygienic and can spread infection, the Malaysian Medical Association says they are not often washed and carry germs that can cause pneumonia and blood infections, the Star newspaper said on Tuesday.
"And when doctors are doing their clinical rounds, they dangle all over the place," the paper quoted association president Dr Teoh Siang Chin as saying.
But the Star quoted a ministry official as saying it needed more proof that neckties were a danger before it relaxed the dress code for doctors in hospitals. |
Thought this was interesting... A group of DOCTORS using a MEDICAL STUDY to remove a part of their uniform they don't like...
last time I checked, if you work at a hospital, it's your job to make sure your uniform is clean and sterile... why shouldn't you wash your necktie with everything else??

I suppose it might have something to do with most ties being silk, and therefore not really "washable."

In Australia the docs in the public hospitals are allowed to wear whatever they want.Jeans and T shirt, sneakers, tank tops.
I have never seen a private hospital Doc in casual clothes thou, their policys might be different!
Makes sense to let them wear no tie,why not,who cares what they wear.As long as they have the credentials and expertise!

If cleanliness is an issue, why don't they just wash them when they clean thier uniforms? The people here in BC can be told to go home if their uniform is not completely clean and sterile when they show up for work. AND THEY DO CHECK.

I think IIM has a good point. If people own silk ties, they're not going to wash them with their regular clothes as they have to be professionally cleaned - a hassle which I can understand not wanting to do and where it can become an issue in a hospital.
