PostMon Apr 30, 2007 7:13 pm    America Possibly Ready for First Talk with Iran in 28 Years

Quote:
Condoleezza Rice held out the prospect yesterday of direct talks with her Iranian counterpart this week in what would be Americas most significant contact with the Islamic republic since ties were severed almost 30 years ago.

The US Secretary of State was speaking shortly after Iran said that Manouchehr Mottaki, its Foreign Minister, would on Thursday attend talks in Egypt on the future of Iraq.

I will not rule out that we may encounter one another, Dr Rice said in a series of interviews with Sunday talk shows. This isnt an opportunity to talk about US-Iran issues. This is really an opportunity for all of Iraqs neighbours to talk about how to stabilise Iraq.

Yay.

I completely understand the perspective that negotiating with Iran is a bad plan. However, I also completely disagree with it.

Basically, there's two options: talk to Iran or bomb Iran. I favour option #1 for several reasons. Firstly, it's slightly cheaper. Secondly, it is more likely to have the words "DON'T PANIC" written on it. Bombs generally cause panic.

I have a feeling that motivating Iran to become a more responsible power in the Middle East will stabilise the region much more than a toppled, war-torn Iran would.

Talk does not mean compromise or appeasement. Talk is just talk--just so. But as long as the dialogue goes on, there is the possibility that something will leak through, that some sort of rapport will open up to allow a diplomatic solution.

At the very least, it would be a good diversion whilst the planes refuel in Kuwait (or wherever they do it these days).

Do you know if this is for sure or not? From what I read, the article makes it sounds like it is just a possibility. I am hoping that we do talk with them, basically for the reasons you outlined above.

I haven't followed much of the news lately. I have no clue what's going on. I'm just commenting on the possibility.

Just look at the language she uses:
Quote:
I will not rule out that we may encounter one another"

"I will not rule out".

It makes me groan. The world would be a better place if diplomats were occasionally less diplomatic and more straightforward.
