How come every ship they meet is rightside up?

Here is an interesting concept for you.
Due to the fact that artificial gravity forces you to stay on the deck's ground, you can never REALLY know if you are right side up or not. Infact, I should point out, that every ship you encounter may be upside down, however, you wouldn't notice.
More to the point, they have met a ship more then once which is upside down.
For example: The Dyson Spehere. ((Insert groans here...))
The Dyson Sphere was constructed AROUND a sun, so no matter what you THINK you are, you MAY be upside down. And if you were walking on the inside or outside of that sphere, and you looked up at a starship... it would look upside down. You see? It APPEARS that they never meet any upside down or sideways ships, but that is because it is from thier point of view.

Perhaps once a ships makes contact with another ships the ship turns into the same angle as the one they meet autamtically, making them both on the same angle when they are in visual range.

voila.

omg. I was actually thinking about this recently. and my sister suggested to me that prehaps they have standardisded it. In the same way we know north is up the top, coz the brittish and americans like to think they are on top . but i pointed out this works for alpha quadrant stuff... but for voyager... not really. I guess the people who made it never really thought about it. but i do like lionheads idea, and even if they arn't the right way up... it wouldn't matter when hailing each other, or transporting.

Or perhaps there is a point of reference outside the galatic plane that they use to orientate themselves. This would theorhetically work for Starfleet ships, but not alien vessals... but how are we to know if a Kazon, Jem Hadar, or Borg vessal is rightside up or not?

The easiest way to explain this is to say that all ships orient themselves northerly on the galactic plane. According to the Fictional ST universe the galaxy looks something like this

Yeah, I always guessed they just align themselves with the Galaxy...sorta so they're going through it/across it like going long ways through a giant CD...haha As for how they decided what's up and what's down, that's beyond me! And in the same book that Ntypical's pic is from, it explains how planets aren't always just straight along one horizontal line, from one to the next...like, you not only have to go left a bit, you also have to like....go up! Haha I don't suppose I'm making any sense here! But yah...I'm just trying to say that they probably have to fly at angles and do a few twists and turns every now and then.

and some times they would have to angle there travel upward and down wards... coz i don't think all the planets would be on exactly the same plane... some would be higher and lower than earth.

Very good point And now that I think about it there have been a few episodes where the ships have moved in a 3-d environment, and not always been right side- up. So maybe they orient themselves by something above the galactic plane like a galaxy or something for Bering when hey meet another vassal.

Omg, haha...obviously I really did do a poor job of explaining myself, cos that's exactly what I was trying to say!

I remember my dad saying this back in the late 80s. They need to just have an upside-down ship in the new movie so that no one can make fun of it anymore.

This topic is for four year olds, Star Trek is a TV show.
In reality the ships would travel in various directions.
In fact when moving long distance, it makes sense to exit the galaxy and travel away from matter.

this topic is 1 year old on its own.

what you are saying doesn't make sense though. Existing the galaxy makes you travel to other galaxies, where there is also matter.

Could the viewscreen just scan the image and figure out whats top and bottom and display the resultant image the correct way up?

Maybe there's a intergalactic (or at least federation wide) agreed 'up' and 'down', cause it makes manouvering in formation alot easier.

maybe they have a galactic highway system sorta like airplanes have to fly specific routes to avoid collisions (especially when flying at warp speed). it would then make sense that most ships you encounter would be oriented on a parallel plane.
