Mobile Emitter

My guess is that it first projects the hologram, after that the hologram will have to be in the "solid-matter" form in order to allow the mobile emitter to be attached to the hologram/ holographic object where it will continiue projecting continuously. But the question is, can the doctor be in the "Matter can pass through" form while using his mobile emitter since the mobile emitter will have to be attached to something solid?

Yea, I've always wondered about that. Was there ever an instance where he passed through a force field or something when he was wearing the emitter?

He could make part of his body un-solid- stick a foot through a forcefield or something- but not completely so. Anyway, forcefields stop everything- holomatter included

He used to walk through them all the time in sick bay. For example when Tom was mutating and he was behind the force field.

The Mobile Emitter could probably go through the force fields with him. Kind of like how Seven of Nine's Borg technology allowed her to walk through the field.

In sickbay he doesn't have to use the emitter, as his progam is stationed there.

i think the emitter has some sort of hoverin technolgy which aallows it to hover along side the hologram(homing in on his energy)

Or, the fact the Hologram is created thanks to the emitter the emitter is always attached to the hologram, its just energy.

Could very well be the Emitter can become holographic by itself too. Which expalns how it can pass through forcefields

There's a noncanon paper on a fansite about it.

The emitter is apparently non-holographic, but is made of forcefield resistant alloy. On teh other hand, this could have been made up by people like us- no official backing.

Here's an interesting concept on how it can stay floating while attached to a non-solid hologram:
I believe, as it's from the 29th century, that it is possible it has an anti-grav unit integrated into it. This would allow it to stay in place, even while the doctor was not in solid form.

Obviously the emitter is a REAL time solid object.

The Doctor obviously has to be in Solid Form when using it, so that way the emitter can actually be attached to the hologram.

It was said in an episode in season one, when the doctor goes to the holodeck to save Harry Kim...Janeway said, "You will have the ability to make yourself solid or allow objects to pass through you at will." But not both at the same time. The same concept would apply.

But Seven's Borg technology passing through forcefields with her is different than the Doctor's emitter possibly going through fields with him. It was Seven's technology that adapted to and repelled the force field off of her body that allowed her to pass through it. The Doctor could pass through a force field without his emitter because he was just photons and a FORCE FIELD himself. So he could always go through it. The emitter is designed with the simple and only purpose of allowing a hologram to exist without a holodeck or multiple emitters in his location. Not to repel force fields for him.

What about in 'Revulsion' when the doctor and B'Elanna transport to a damaged ship and meet a holgram that hates humans and has killed his crew. There's a point when the doctor and the 'isomorph' throw things at each other and they pass through the doctor, then there's a point when it hits the mobile emitter but still passes through the doctor. How does that happen?

Given its technology revealed by Star Trek, it is far beyond the scope of 24 century technology. This means it is far more complicated that took years of research to achieve. It's only job is its designation- to make a holographic character mobile. Voyager didn't have the technology to add anything to it. What else should a 2oz. PDA do?
