Wed Mar 28, 2007 5:25 pm Question about the Borg......... |
|
If the Borg have been assimulating species for a long time, how did they come into existence in the first place? Does anybody know the answer to this? My dh thinks that Guinna (Whoopi's role on TNG) hit on this topic some but I don't remember.
Thanks

I don't think Trek has ever really discussed how they came about.
Memory Alpha has a pretty detailed history

Wasn't the 'begining' of the Borg alluded to, even though vaguely, by the Borg Queen?

Very vaguely. They never really answered the question.

From what I skimmed over in Memory Alpha, the Borg started out as an organic species, and somehow began adding inorganic parts. They really don't go into any more detail than that though.

it had been theorized once that the first borg was the melding of V'Ger and William Decker/Ilia - nice theory and it could have been debated but then ENTERPRISE had the episode where there were actual Borg 150 years earlier, and effectively ended any possibility of that.

Well, before you say Enterprise made yet another mistake, remember that Voyager and First Contact said the same thing

There are many theories, but no canon answers. Not even memory aplha can help you.
There is just no history of the borg. Only fanfiction and theories.
my theory is that it was a species that experimented with nanotechnology and that it went horribly wrong a couple of thousand years ago somewhere in the Delta Quadrant. They where enslaved by the nanoprobes and now the nanorpobes use living, organic species to find perfection. They assimilate and conquer everything they come across because thats the way a machine thinks.
and then there is my Fan Fiction of course.

No that's just the way the Federation first meet the Borg, what they are asking is how did they come into existence in the first place.

This is a question that should never be revealed IMO. With the way the Trek writers are going, I have a feeling it would be very dissapointing.
I wouldn't mind seeing the Borg homeworld though.

Yeah, I kinda wonder what it is, but the mystery is interesting, it allows us to think up many interesting ideas. I also wonder how the queen came into power, she wasn't the first drone...

They look Humanoid, not human. Most alien species in Star Trek are Humanoid.
Though you have non-humanoid species to(Tholians, Species 8472, Insectoid Xindi) but yuo don't see them as Borg as i don't think they have the budget to make a Non-humanoid speciment WITH borg implants.

I've seen Klingon and Andorian borg. You should see the "Unimatrix zero Part 1 and 2" episodes of Star Trek: Voyager.

I think this is because a non-humanoid borg would be inefficient at best, and even if they were selected for assymilation, you would not see them, as they would be given some other sort of task that they were most compatible for instead of walking around a cube repairing stuff, or surveying things on a planet.

I'm working on a fanfic called Borg: Origins. It deals with a rogue Starfleet team going on to a cube, then back in time to destroy the race that became the Borg- a humanoid species called the Bortians

They've referenced it a few times, but in Voyager they showed that massive space station like thing as where the queen was...

I knew about the 'space station thing', but didn't remember any references to a homeworld. Thanks.
