Teachers Drop Holocaust, Crusades From History Lessons to Avoid Offending Children

The Times of London

Teachers are dropping controversial subjects such as the Holocaust and the Crusades from history lessons because they do not want to offend children from certain races or religions, a report claims.

Good God, I mean, come on? First the Three Little Piggies are changed not to offend Muslims, and now history is being ignored primarily because of this? Will this ever end? I mean, this is getting out of control. What if I said I was offended at learning about the Crusades and Spanish Inquisition because it shined a bad light on the history of the Catholic Church? Would it not be taught then? This political correctness garbage is just sickly out of hand. With all this PC trash to please Muslims coming out of the UK, it's no wonder the Iranians would decide to capture fifteen of their sailors.

Good lord, now history is being effected? Really, I can't think of anything more selfish then to drop some of those lessons, kids today need to learn about the holocaust, no matter what their religion or background is.

Your topic title is a bit of a misnomer. It doesn't mention Muslims at all.

I read the article (of course, especially since it's short), but that was after I made that subject, which was routed from the misleading sub-heading on FoxNews.com's main page. Makes sense that it would be not to offend Muslim children (considering that's the trend in Europe these days), but nonetheless, regardless of the group they're trying not to offend, this is just stupid, not to mention horrifying in many ways.

I have to agree, really. I mean, the whole PC thing is getting out of hand. I had a teacher once that said he knew it was a touchy subject, but he had to cover it, he felt it important.

When will it ever end? when the small percentage is not offended, but the large one is?

That doesn't mean it's meant solely for Muslims though. It could be for Roman Catholics that are offended by the barbaric view depicted during the Crusades or Jews that don't feel the teaching on the Holocaust is quite "accurate" enough, as that subject tends to be controversial.

I do agree that regardless of who it is, limiting education to make people feel better is...scary.

It definitly is, I mean, I understand the points you have just made, Andy, lord knows, I do not want student to be tuaght a lie, the truth is paramount, however, instead of people working together to make it right, one just...complains, gets offended, and it is...removed? *sighs*

Now that schools may not be teaching about the Holocaust, what might parents teach their students? "Hitler was great and the Holocaust didn't happen?" After all, there are minority groups in societies across the globe that believe both those things, so shouldn't we avoid offending them, though, even if it does perpetuate the myth that the Holocaust didn't happen and maintain antisemitic sentiment in society? Uh-huh, right

A part of me thinks this is a Media April Fool... they always do one big one.... but on the other hand, it wouldn't surprise me. This sort of thing has been going on for a while.

I moved to Texas from Ohio several years ago. I was surprised to find out how differantly the Cival War was taught to my Texan friends than it was in nothern schools.

People, even schools, will change the way things are passed along to fit their needs and beliefs. Pathetic? Indeed.

The Holocaust, like so many other parts of history is far to important to be forgotten. Forgetting a mistake leads to repeating it. I fear for our world.

When it comes to the Civil War, of course it's gonna be taught differently in the North than in the South. That's rather implied as a result of biases to the sides of the war that are natural. But at least they teach it. And indeed, not teaching a major event like the Holocaust almost ensures that we are doomed to repeat it.

If this is true, I am sure many more people will be offended by them not teaching certain parts of history than teaching it. I know I certainly would be.

In my school we spent about 3 years on World War I and II. That's all we seemed to do. I think this story is blown out of all proportion.
