Quote: | British team grows human heart valve from stem cells
Tissue for transplants could be available within three years if trials are successful
Alok Jha, science correspondent
Monday April 2, 2007
The Guardian
A British research team led by the world's leading heart surgeon has grown part of a human heart from stem cells for the first time. If animal trials scheduled for later this year prove successful, replacement tissue could be used in transplants for the hundreds of thousands of people suffering from heart disease within three years.

Wow, this is pretty cool reading. They actually grew a heart valve...

Notice that these are not embryonic stem-cells, but stem-cells harvested from bone marrow. While they still say they have a long way to go, it's good to see adult stem cells being used for good purposes.

I agree, Puck. This is a fantastic achievement indeed - and for non-embryonic stem cells, at that.

The only real achievements in this field have all come from adult stem-cells. Nothing tangible has come from embryonic.

Oh, I know, that's true. I was just, like you, putting emphasis on the fact of the type of stem cell.

The only real achievements in this field have all come from adult stem-cells. Nothing tangible has come from embryonic. | Because no one lets people use them....

That's not true. The legislative issue isn't a matter of whether or not it's legal, but rather government funding for it. It's entirely legal and in practice in the US, just not with federal funds.

Embryos are much more than that - they're human life.

How are they 'life'?
They do not breathe, they do not eat, they can not think, they can not reproduce, they can not communicate.
I see no indication of life.

That's not entirely true.
There are only 19 or so functioning embryonic stem cell lines that scientists are allowed to use under federal funding. And most of those are damaged or have other issues that make them poor samples for testing.
A lot of the progress has been made outside of embryonic stem cells because what's available is healthier. However, with adult stem cells you have the problem of them being differentiated already, they can only do a few things in comparison to the embryonic cells.
Private companies are working with embryonic cells, however, there are much fewer of them because of costs. The current laws make it very difficult for rapid research to happen.
