Isn't this just the dumbest story you've ever heard?
Quote: | School Changes Name of Play to 'Three Little Puppies' to Avoid Offending Muslims
Little Red Riding Hood ... Hansel and Gretel ... the Three Little Puppies?
That's what one British school renamed the traditional Three Little Pigs story for a school play, so as not to offend Muslims in the community, London's Daily Mail reported.
Organizers of the children's musical theater performance changed the lyrics' character's names in a move some including Muslims are saying went too far.

For once, RM, I agree with you. That's a bit much, I'd say.

We've agreed a few times before, LF, so it's not really "for once" But yeah, when you have Muslims themselves saying this is stupid, you know it's stupid

Weird. But it doesn't really change the point of the play, soooo.... who cares?

I don't get it. How are Muslims offended? I know they don't eat pigs, but looking at them is bad too?

Ha, you'd actually think that changing it would offend the Muslims more than not. If they changed it because Muslims don't eat pigs, and in the story the wolf is the one eating the pigs, and he's the "bad guy", wouldn't that be correlating the wolf with the muslims? Or I am just overthinking this,

no, no Theresa, I agree with your logic, besides no group of people were meant to be harrassed when they made the orginal story, so why change the story?
You wouldent change a great play like shakespear, just because something in it might offend someone, would you?

That comparison is rather frightening.

Well, why is it, Aaron? You're saying that it's ok to change the story to puppies because it might offend someone? (Then the response is "Uh...why did you do that?"). I think that's a reasonable comparism. Frankly, this political correctness crap offends me, for things like this, or Christmas, what ever it is, to be changed becausue it might offend somone, is bull.
To the point, if it offends you, don't read/watch/vew/listen/what ever it. Let the rest of us who enjoy the origional story/intents in peace.

How the comparison between Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, etc. and the "Three Little Pigs" can't be frightening is beyond me. But my point was that although the change is superfluous, it doesn't detract from the original story in any way. I suppose if there really were somebody to offend by changing it in the first place, I might understand what the big deal is about, but honestly I don't see how it can really matter either way.

I find the thought of three little piggies being eaten more palatable than three little puppies,
And to some, Shakespeare sucks, and is completely boring, so to that aspect, it'd be solely individual taste.
It's causing no offense, it wasn't written to cause offense, therefore it should not have been changed. Integrate Muslim stories if you like, but don't force the children to change theirs to suit someone else. What happens now that we have puppies? Are the Koreans going to find that offensive and we have to change it yet again? We're supposed to be a diverse culture, so let us be diverse. Don't make us uniform.

Umm ... I kind of get what Aaron said about how it doesn't change the point so who cares ... but ... at the same time some Muslims are saying this is too much. Its kind of crazy that we're taking this whole "not offending anyone" to the extreme. We're changing children's stories now?

Doesn't anyone else think it's frightening that somebody approved the idea of teaching children about big, scary wolves eating cute puppies instead of pigs?
Don't get me wrong, pigs are cute too, but in a different way. I mean, these are puppies ... I'm sure a wolf might eat one if it were really hungry, but the two aren't normally associated ... it's kind of wrong.

Exactly, HH. I don't like the idea of the wolf eating puppies. It...doesn't feel right with the story.

You guys woulda loved this speech I heard yesterday on political correctness, lol. She had some good examples about political correctness going too far in the US and UK, and it most certainly is.
