Sun Mar 04, 2007 11:38 pm Commentary: Anti-immigrant mob creates false heroes |
|
Quote: | SAN DIEGO, California (CNN) -- The world is upside down. A posse of Republican lawmakers who, when opposing amnesty for illegal immigrants, like to talk about how rules must be followed and how we shouldn't reward lawbreakers. They're now demanding that a pair of convicted felons be rewarded with a presidential pardon. |

I've known about this story for a while. They should get their pardon.

They shot two unarmed people, without provocation, and lied about. They should stay in jail.

Clearly you don't know the whole story and only the bias stuff you get from that commentary. First of all, it was only one person. Second of all, they didn't know for a fact that he was unarmed. There's a lot more to this story than you or anyone else knows. I have to get to bed in a few minutes after finishing up this assignment, so I can't elaborate, but I'll do so tomorrow.

They lied about shooting a man, who was most likely unarmed.

So do we know what happened to the criminal? (I mean the man carrying 700 lbs of marijuana...a drug dealer...that could have probably been armed. Not to mention perhaps he was here illegally.)

Here's what happened to him: he was recently arrested, again, for illegally crossing the border with pot.
He was granted immunity to go testify at the trial, and while he was still under that immunity he was caught red-handed again.
Was what they did to cover it up wrong? Of course, and they should get some punishment for it. But the circumstances of the situation are at least enough to warrant suspicion. These are trained, experienced patrolmen who know a heck of a lot better than to just shoot an unarmed person entering this country illegally in the first place. That has to be taken into account. Then, if you listen to them tell the story, the circumstances of that night are not what we've been told. Besides, who would you trust more: two experienced patrolmen (one of which I believe is himself Hispanic) or a guy who's been caught at least three times sneaking over the border illegally with dope?
There's more to this story than meets the eye, and I think the president would be wise to give these men a pardon after several months of incarceration. Campeon (I believe it's this one) is receiving horrible treatment by other inmates in the jail, too, 'cause they found out who he is, and he's not getting the protection he should get. That's just wrong.

Why did they shoot the guy? Its obvious the dope smuggler didn't fire back, because if that happened, they wouldn't have lied about it. All three deserve prison time. But I would transfer the former police to a different prison.

The illegal was running from them, and I believe that, when one of them tried to apprehend him, he attacked that individual, and the demeanor in which he acted made the patrolmen feel threatened, giving them the distinct impression that he was armed and dangerous. I think they acted appropriately up until they started removing evidence.

The fact that they removed evidence points to their guilt. Why hide, if you haven't done anything wrong?

It's called panic. You do the shots and then the guy gets away afterward? Just because they panicked doesn't mean they're guilty of a crime prior to that.

They shot the man, who got away, then they should have called it in. A simple radio call would have prevented from ending in a federal pen.

We have the luxury of saying that's all that would have been required, but do we know about the protocol? Do we know about the entire situation? They should have reported in, but given the circumstances, it is valid to say that they could have panicked.

And that panic got them a prison sentence. You think two police officers would think better.

They're border patrolmen, not policemen. And yes, one would expect better, but one has to give the people putting their lives on the line for our safety and security the benefit of the doubt, especially given such circumstances.
