As many of you perhaps now know, the movie has been greenlit, and is schedualed for a release on December 25, 2008.
Discus rumors, interviews that sort of thing in this one topic please (Other topics have...aged)

I encourage people to look around for further information, or I'd be here for two hours making a post on links for the movie

So I guess Abrams is "officially" directing it, now. I thought he was all along. Weird.

So is it still just rumors that Matt Damon, Adrian Brody and Gary Sinese will star in the movie?

And it comes out Christmas 2008.

^well it's not really the next generation. It's pre TOS with Kirk and Spock.

Kirk and Spock are going to be a hard act to follow. I dont really think Damon & co. are up to the job.

If the rumor is true, I have a hard time seeing Damon action in a Trek movie. He just doesn't seem like Trek material (if there is such a thing?).
I really hope that this movie is decently. Otherwise I think it is certain that we are not going to see any new Trek for a looooong time.

Well Im hoping for this movie to beat least half as awsome as the rest of the films...
I will be right disapointed if they go with major hollywood stars just because they're famous... like realy... Matt Damon doesnt seem to me like much of an ST kinda guy... but you never know... I never realy saw Jeri Ryan as much of one and she pulled off a great Seven...
Judging by what I've read about the film so far... this Abrams guy appears to know what he's doing and I have faith that the ST franchise wont be destroyed with the upcoming movie.

Am a bit amused and worried about the idea Matt Damon might be Kirk...but hopefully all the main cast shall pull it off! I assumed they'd go for lesser-known actors for these iconic roles.
Whoever is cast I just hope that it will be better than the last two Star Trek films which I found to be a bit disappointing. So far the signs seem promising!

I didn't notice this - and it was stickied all along, lol.
I have to say that, while I'm excited for a new Trek movie, I'm not happy/am disappointed that it's going to center around the "early days" of Kirk and Spock. That's real annoying.

Really?
I don't find it as interesting as perhaps a few other ideas, but it is never the less a legendary team within the Trek universe.
Kirk and Spock are referenced in every single series at one point (except ENT, of course) and their characters were integral to the 'passing of the colors' to the future characters that I grew up watching.
I think we should perhaps reserve judgement for after seeing the film.

I think the frustration is the fact that last prequel didn't exactly go over too well. There's a lot of material to use in Trek - and another prequel is all they can think of?
Becasue their characters are so loved by fans, it seems like they're playing with fire by using their characters. Just my take on it.

TM has a point, I loved Enterprise, but after...the failure, it's a bad choice, IMO, for the next movie to be a prequel. Like she said, theres Sooooo many ideas that could be done, or even used/created (Like the state of affiars with the end of the Dominion War, anyone?) and this is what they think of? Oi...
However, I do agree that harsh judgement of the film should be reserved untill we know more about it.

I think, quite a few DS9 fans would be disappointed by a film like this.
A few reasons:
1) primary characters would be absent, based on the final episode of DS9
2) the TNG crew wasn't involved
3) VOY wasn't even in the same quadrant
based on these facts, they would almost have to form a whole new crew
I'm not sure that would be received well

I'm even more concerned about this now. Check this out: http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/news/article/46176.html
This is the part that especially worries me:
Quote: | The article contends that Kurtzman and Orci described the film as "not in any way a prequel but a reimagining of the franchise," without quoting them directly saying that. The article does quote Orci as saying, "We're not going to start totally from scratch." But, "We want it to feel like it's updated and of the now. That's actually the discussions we're having now: how to keep the look of the universe yet have it not look like nothing's new. It's tricky." |

I've read that some time ago, apparently, what they 'meant' (They wont really define what they are talking about) is that it will 'look' like it should look, the corridors, technology etc.., but it wont 'look' like it was made in the 1960's when one sees the visual aspect of it.

Are you pretty sure about that? What I got from that was that it will seem like Trek and have the Trek look, but it will no longer be "authentic," especially considering this "reimagining" idea. Something like that, at least. I just wish they would tell us more about the plot to stem the outrage (or increase it, depending).

Well, that's what some people seem to think, I don't know, I agree how fusterating it is when they say things like that, then don't clarify. We've also got to be careful, we can't say "Thats it! They've ruined Canon by the visual aspects!" when we don't even know what class(es) the movie will take place on.

Well, I'm looking more at the story and the timeline right now than the visual aspects of the production, though I'm sure I could be annoyed at the visual aspects (though making it look basically the same but with up-to-date visual effects is entirely acceptable). But, again, it's the story, characters, and timeline that I'm more frustrated about.

Well, if you watch "In a Mirror, Darkly" you can see a wonderful example of keeping the same look, and yet 'updating' it. The Defiant bridge was painstalkingly recreated, and yet an update in technology allowed it to look AMAZING, it looked like...well, it looked like it was a Starship, not tin slaped together on a very cheap budget.
I will agree on the timline thing, while seeing some TOS in current visual effects would be fun, post nemesis would be a better idea.

I agree wholeheartedly on everything. I'm entirely file with updated visual effects and stuff, but the story's my issue with it. And the direction in general. As a fan, it's very disappointing.
