Thu Feb 08, 2007 11:10 pm Ku Klux Klan reportedly on the rise |
|
Quote: | The white supremacist Ku Klux Klan is on the rise in the United States and is exploiting the issue of illegal immigration to attract new members, according to a new report by the Anti-Defamation League.
The Klan has declined dramatically since the 1960s when its members dressed in white robes, burned crosses and spread terror through lynchings but immigration is helping to revive its fortunes, said the league which monitors hate groups.
"The (Klan's) thinking is that if the average Joe is against immigration then we are against it too. They are trying to gain a foothold in the mainstream community," said Allen Kohlhepp of the league's southeast region on Thursday. |

This is horrifying. Of course these groups would use any methods at their disposal to recruit members, so it's not that surprising, but for people not to realize their stupidity in accepting this...this is worthy of concern.

I heard a while ago that they were adopting highways just to put their name on the signs. I can't stand even thinking about the things they've done. Why are they allowed to exist?

Freedom of Speech brings the good with the bad. At least they don't have many officials on their side this time.

They mostly have former members that are officials, like Robert Byrd, Democrat and currently the President Pro-Tempore of the United States Senate.
But yes, it's really just an issue of free speech now with them, not so much injuring people (at least I think).
That's all I can really say on the matter tonight, though, but yeah.

I think they're disgusting, but if they don't attack anyone, or break any laws, we can't touch them.

Now, I guess when it all comes down to it, I could PROBABLY be described as a racist, but I like to keep it to myself. I'm racist, in my own home, with the blinds shut and the doors locked. But I wouldn't take it outside if I was in a ghost town with a paper bag over my head. Being outwardly and openly racist is probably the stupidest thing you could do. Thats like painting a target on your back and writing "Nazi ... come n' get it" underneath.

At Speech and Debate in the past there was a speech on racism and how the worst kind of thing to do is holding it in, how that can only lead to more trouble in the future. I agree to the point that there is nothing better about being privately racist than there is being publicly racist, because holding it in only causes it to increase and increase 'till finally an explosion is bound to occur.
(Also, as a member of the STV family, I strongly consider you to deal with your racist feelings to the best of your ability so that they don't bring trouble in the future )

(I've been doing it for 17 years, RM, I think I can handle it and to be quite honest, I'm rather insulted that you think you had to tell me.)
Racism has been a big part of the Extemporaneous Speaking division of our Speech team, I've heard some really good Speeches for both sides, point being, racism isn't cool, but its a part of who some people are and some peoples roots, if you deny your past, you're doomed to repeat it. Therefore, let people be as racist as they want in the privacy of their own homes, and with other people who share your same views, but being overly open about it is just plane dumb.

Huh?
My grandparents (and further predecessors) are racist, so therefore I must be, and if I deny it, I'm going to be racist? I can't think for myself?

That's how such groups start... (KKK) That's how most any movement starts. Small groups get together to discuss something they agree on. Small groups grow. They have different chapters spring up. It's no longer a small group.
Thinking you are naturally superior to anyone is STUPID. Yay ignorance!

Well, in all honesty, I think at times, everybody is racist. It just depends on how far you believe in that idealogoy. I have to admit that it's brave of you to come forward and openly admit you're racist with the stigma that comes with doing so. However, I have to ask, why are you racist? I mean...what do you get out of hating an entire race? I'm not trying to lecture you, nor "save" you from your racism, but I do find the concept of racism to be weird. You're choosing to limit yourself by hating an entire race and trying to live a (insert race you dislike)-free life. What's the point? You lose a lot of knowledge in the process....

Yes, it is stupid. However, it is still within someone's rights to think it. I would be scared if the government started legislating our thoughts.

Oh, I'm not denying the right to stupidity,
And I'd have to disagree that everybody is racist at times. I honestly cannot even comprehend the idea. Just exercising my right to be stupid, I guess.
Everyone discriminates, yes, is racist? IMO, no.
