PostThu Feb 08, 2007 12:10 am    Windows Vista

I've had a new computer equipped with Windows Vista OS for a week now, and it's awesome. I've had some problems, including one serious, but otherwise it's fantastic. Really cool.

Anyone else seen it yet? If so, what do you think about it? Let's talk Vista!

Yeah i installed it on a machine i don't regular use and i have to say that microsoft has really found away to some how get worser and worser with each release. They really killed any hope for me and most all my freinds by getting rid of OpenGL and just using DirectX, Photoshop, Lightwave, and most of the programs i use benchmarked several times worser on new Vista machines than on older, less powerful XP machines. So my words on this is stay as far away from Vista as possible, and that microsoft has found yet another way to kill itself.

I've told everyone I know not to get it for at least a year. Windows hasn't released an OS in recent history thats been 100% stable on its release date. Also, a lot of the "hot" features I've seen from it aren't really that great.

And if you've already had a serious problem within a week? Not good. Really not good.

It took them 'til service pack 2 to get XP right. And they never got ME/2000 to work properly.

Yeah...I am not so much interested in trying Vista at the moment, they just kind of made Windows shinier again, and didn't really do much else. It's like when they went from 2000 to XP, it was pretty lame. Yep.

I like XP. I'd like to see how Vista works, but I'm gonna stick with XP. For now at least.

I tried ultimate out on my work computer at work today and it blue screen memory dumped the very first time it loaded into the operating system, although that machine is overclocked from 3 to 3.75 (original P4) but always worked fine in XP with the CPU voltage upped a little. I'm surprised that the OS didn't have drivers for the 3 year old sata raid card in the machine and I only found beta drivers.

But apart from that it seemed to work really well. One thing I like is that all the ATAPI (optical, cd, dvd) drives in the pc are better layed out in windows explorer and don't seem to have 'hang' problems, when those problems occur. They also support direct formatting for RW media and gives the ability to specify the file system for the Disc.

Another thing is file copying seems unusualy faster in vista and gives more nifty options like transfer rate for local copying, which is better than time estimations which are never correct no matter how the 'predictions' are given.

The video in the GUI seems to 'grab' a little and is not real smooth for even the simple windows moving or screen savers on a 128mb nvidia lower of the range card. I hope that nvidia release some good vista drivers soon.

Main thing I would want vista for is two 8800GTX's in SLI and flight sim X with direct X 10.

I agree, I don't think I'm going to use Vista until I get a new computer.

What was the probelm?

I only ask because I told to find a laptop I like so that I can have one for college or whatever.

But yeah, I can't stand the Mac OS, so I'm not sure what to do at this point,

Linux?

I see no reason to change from Kubuntu Feisty Fawn to Vista. Would be a downgrade from my point of view.

My operating system went away. The hard drive was entirely wiped, OS gone. This was the second day I had it. I spent two hours on the phone with Dell and that didn't really do much (though I have to say the guy was surprisingly helpful, considering all the negatives I've heard about their customer service. I did a search and eventually found something about this being a problem not yet figured out. I thought it might have to do with problems I had due to the printer I hooked up, but that's apparently not it (though I still can't get the printer to work). I've also had a couple computer freezes which twice caused the computer to do this weird thing and shut down.

But that's what you would expect from a new OS. I got a new computer and I figured I might as well get the new one, not the old. Vista's better overall, I have to say, than XP. It's a lot cooler and a lot faster with things, such as file copying, as PrankishSmart pointed out, and it just has other features and stuff that XP didn't that I like.

If you're getting a new computer, I say get it. If not, I'd hold off on it until at least the first service pack comes out.

Actually, a new OS shouldn't do that when it's released to the public as a stable OS. That's a major bug that should have been fixed.

It sounds like Vista has a lot of problems, or someting isn't installing right.

This "missing operating system" thing has happened three times to me in total, and apparently it's happening all over the place with Dell. They're investigating the problem, but it relates to Vista. They had me do something, and also told me to watch out for the compatibility of programs that I install.

The lesson I'm wanting to express today is, don't get Vista. It's not a matter of getting a Dell, but it's a matter of Vista. Wait until the next service pack is out to get the OS. That's all I have to say

Though I have to admit, it's an awesome OS. Fantastic, save for the few bugs I've experienced.

I've used it at various stores (including the local Apple store) and just found it kind of annoying to navigate through and use. I'm rather certain that's simply because I'm used to using Windows, though. Maybe I'll find out when Leoperd comes out and go from there?

Anywho, I was thinking of getting an Alienware notebook. The one I was looking at had lots of features and wasn't too expensive (plus they're made by Dell, which I trust). They also have a program where you can get XP and then upgrade to Vista at a later date. However, I don't actually know anybody who owns an Alienware pc, so it's kind of a mystery.

Yeah, it took me a while to get adjusted to the navagation. It really isn't that complicated, just takes a little while.

Alienware is really good. They're in the same price range as a Mac though, and despite being made by Dell, Dell's been smart enough to leave them alone and let them do their own thing for the most part.

I would just like to say at the top of the discussion that I am SO HAPPY that this forum is finally back up and running.

Anyways, I have heard of a few people having troubles with Vista. It's kinda like the Windows ME for 2007.

Did you upgrade this computer from a previous Windows to Vista, or did you purchase it with it already installed?
