I'm not sure anyone really knows how they work. All we have to go on is what we've seen in the movies and series. Which isn't much but it's always nice to theorize.

They are a bit more complicated with reference to a higher state of physics. Temporal physics was one of sevens pets.
The dictionary descibes temporal as a sequence in time rather than space. So temporal shields are shields that are also -out of sync- with present space-time.

...also causing the ship to be protected and shielded from the space time continuum.

"Temporal Weaponry" would be used, upon impacting, say, an enemy ship's shielding as a way of de-synchronizing that ship's shielding with the current space/time continuum. Thereby, removing it temporarily. This may cause other weapons to pierce through, or, it may, through temporal paradox, allow the detonated torpedoe to not have detonated, and instead detonate on the opposing ship's hull. In addition, it may also be used to target vessels who are protected from the time/space continuum through means of temporal shielding because the time/space imbalance could possibly be removed if a time/space weapon of the opposing "frequency" were to detonate on it, thus causing it to synchronize back with normal time/space, leaving the vessel unprotected.
"Temporal Shielding" would be used simply to erase certain effects a weapon could have. For example, a time/space continuum wave((The year of hell)) would not be capable of piercing the ship, and thus, would not effect it, as the Temporal Shielding not only de-synchronized the ship's defences, but the ship itself from Time/Space. This woud then, effect the Time/Space continuum wave because it could not achieve it's fullest capabilities due to the fact that one single piece of history, though miniscule, would not have changed WITH it. It would stop standard weaponry, such as phaser beams, or torpedoes by de-synchronizing them from current space/time, so it may, accidentally send them back or forwards in time, hitting nothing, or perhaps, a vessel/planetary mass once there. This would cause a temporal paradox, which leads me to believe that the programming of the Temporal Shielding only permits weapons fire to be either erased from, or sent into the future of the current time/space continuum, as a photon torpedoe, for example, could be sent accidentally back in time which might impact with a comet, which spawned life onto several planets nearby, which would thus possibly remove the entire alien species the ship in question was fighting, however, as the ship in question was protected from temporal alterations by this Temporal Shielding, they would thus, not know of the consequences of this battle, and merely think that the opposing ship had been destroyed by some kind of equipment malfunction. It is...a very deep and interesting topic.
