California Man Sets Himself, American Flag, Christmas Tree on Fire to Protest Religious Names

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. A man used flammable liquid to light himself on fire, apparently to protest a San Joaquin Valley school district's decision to change the names of winter and spring breaks to Christmas and Easter vacation.

Wow, what an idiot. I'm a HUGE proponent of Christmas break, as you may well know, but imagine if I did this? I couldn't even imagine it, it's so extreme. What an idiot.

Btw, for the record, I'm fine with calling it Spring break. Actually, I'd prefer that one because Easter changes so often.

So much for the theory that if Athiests ran the world there would no longer be fundementalists.

...

Just a little excessive there.

Seriously, it's one thing to oppose something, but why on Earth would someone do that to themselves over the name of a school break?

o.O

What a waste of a perfectly good tree and flag.

While I don't like Winter Break being called Christmas Break (No. I'm not going to explain my reasoning.), but...I would never ever light myself on fire, because of it. That' simply...crazy. As ILH said...I like my skin.

No. It is the other way around. For years, up here, it was Winter Break. Now, all of a sudden, it is Christmas Break. Also, my break doesn't just encompass Christmas. It encompasses Hannukah, Kwanza, New Years Day, etc.

Though, let's not talk about whether or not WINTER Break should be called Christmas Break, let's talk about this guy's stupidity.

Okay, sure. I won't talk about whether or not CHRISTMAS break should be called Winter break, then.

What this guy did was ridiculous. I'm sick and tired of my school district and teachers (with the noted exception of my Jewish AP Gov teacher) calling the break Winter break, yet you see me expressing my distaste to the faces of my teachers or in my speech, not in a literally fiery display in which I'm burning some sort of seasonal symbol (since it couldn't be holiday in my case), the American flag, and myself. It's sickening what this man did.

I think it should be called Winter Break, but I'm not going to fight it this hard.
Its pretty disgusting what he did, but he didn't break any law. Besides suicide...

I feel bad for him. It sounds probable that he had a mental disorder or something happen to him for him to take such extreme action.

Curious. Couldn't this, legal-wise, be considered endangering the general populous? I mean, setting a tree and oneself on fire, all that...That's dangerous to more than just him.

Probably can get in trouble for that, and maybe some sort of disturbing the peace, defacing public/city property, that sort of thing?

Well I would expect that the city is not too happy about him lighting one of their Christmas trees on fire--that would be arson, would it not? I'd make him decorate the replacement all by himself if it weren't for his injuries.

I read the title and couldn't help laughing out loud. What an idiot! Nothing that is done by a person like that can be taken seriously, so I am not offended at all. Wow.
