Spellbinder: The Beginning {PG-13}

It all began when a scientist called Cyrus harnessed the power of magnetism. From that discovery stemmed several articles of technology that were before their time. The people of the village became concerned when they learned of what was happening in the castle. It wasn�t long before they started riots and attacking the more fortunate people who lived in the castle. Not long after the riots began Cyrus designed a means of defense. The Power Suit.


When the wearer strikes the manacles together they can generate a power bolt. The Power Suit increases the voltage stored in the Power Stones and discharges it in the form of static electricity.


Because the technology was so complex only three power suits were built. The Prototype, which Cyrus kept in his private chambers and two others which he instructed his assistants how to use. With these new power suits the assistants went about keeping the peace in the various villages around the land. On a few occasions the assistants were forced to use the power suits for attack and defense. After several uses the villagers started accusing the assistants of using magic spells. It was later decided that to keep the villagers at bay that they would call themselves Spellbinders. To someone who didn�t understand the technology it might seem like magic. Over time it became evident that they�d need to be able to talk to each other over great distances. Cyrus then created the Eyestone.


Eyestones emit a weak radio signal for talking over a distance. For talking over a great distance a summoning tower was required.

Right around the same time they adopted the Symbol that stood for Spellbinder.


-Keltota Province, Year 482(Spellbinder Scale)-

Elena and Vladik, the assistants to Cyrus were on their way back to the castle after quelling a small rebellion in the Yukata Province. Vladik had been complaining for days. His power suit had been damaged during the defense of a village in the Yukata Province.
�I still can�t believe it doesn�t work. I reattached the wiring and the power stones still have a charge. So why can�t I produce a power bolt.� Elena only shook her head and chuckled.

�You take a few to many risks when it comes to using the power suit. Regent Cyrus will probably have you cleaning the castle gutters for a month. Then he�ll give you the �If you can�t take care of it you don�t deserve to be a Spellbinder.� Speech.� Vladik sighed. Elena never let anything happen to her power suit. Of course, she had been there when Cyrus designed the original prototype. So she knew the technology better than anyone. She was second only to Cyrus himself. Of course there were things about the power suit Cyrus hadn�t told anyone. Being that Elena couldn�t produce and answer for why Vladiks power suit didn�t work meant that the problem was likely something that Cyrus hadn�t explained to either of them.
�It�s getting dark. We better make camp.� Elena nodded.
�You make camp. I�ll go catch supper.� Vladik knew how independent Elena was. Though at times he wished she�d be a little more cautious. The woods between the castle and Keltota hadn�t been charted. A moment later Elena disappeared into the woods.

-Keltota Province, Year 482-

Vladik made a circle of stones on the ground where their camp fire would be. Then he filled it with sticks and some kindling. He opened his pack and pulled out his flint rocks. He struck them together over the kindling. A moment later he had a cozy campfire. Vladik sat down and began to poke at the fire with a stick. He sat a few bigger logs on the fire pit. He heard something in the woods. He really wished his power suit worked right now.
�Who�s there?� A moment later Elena walked out of the woods carrying a rabbit.
�Calm down jumpy. It�s just me.� Elena began skinning the rabbit.
�How long until we get back?� Elena shrugged.
�Sometime tomorrow. They aren�t expecting us for another 2 days though. So we�ve got plenty of time.� Vladik sighed and laid back onto the ground. He enjoyed seeing the stars, especially during the early evening. When it was still a little light out but not totally dark.
�Supper�s ready.� Elena announced. Vladik sat up and took a stick out of the fire that had the cooked rabbit on it. Awhile later they finished eating and went to bed.

-Keltota Province, Year 482-

Vladik and Elena continued their journey back to the castle. Neither of them said anything for a long time. They had started out early, wanting to beat the heat of the day. The two of them walked over a hill and saw the castle in the distance. Vladik cried out.
�Oh I can�t wait! Sleep in my own bed, properly prepared food. It�s good to be home.� Elena scoffed and walked passed Valdik. He caught up with her in time to hear her whisper under her breath.
�Properly prepared food� Next time he can starve�� Vladik felt bad for speaking without thinking first.
�I didn�t mean that your cooking was bad. I just meant that a nice full course meal would be good since we�ve been away for so long.� Elena knew it was the truth but Vladik occasionally came off as rude and inconsiderate without realizing it.
�You�re so full of yourself.�

Niether of them said another word until they entered the castle. The guards didn�t even try to speak to them as they passed. The two of them walked up a stone staircase and into a corridor. Several servants could be seen scrubbing the floor and fixing cracks in the wall. Vladik had remembered a punishment he got once. He had accidentally set fire to a hay pile when he was using the power suit. Regent Cyrus had called him careless and less than observant. They stopped next to a large wooden door. Elena knocked and waited for a reply.
�Come in.� A voice said through the door.

Elena opened the door and passed through, Vladik followed a moment later. Regent Cyrus looked up from a book he�d been reading.
�Is something the matter?� Elena shook her head.
�No Regent. We were able to put down the resistance in Yukata.� She paused.
�Spellbinder Vladik damaged his power suit. We are unable to find the cause of the malfunction.� Cyrus�s gaze fell upon Vladik.
�Remove your power suit.� Vladik complied and pulled the suit over him and handed it to Cyrus. Cyrus examined the suit for a moment.
�You�re excused.� Elena and Vladik turned to leave.
�Not you Vladik, you�re staying to repair the power suit.� Vladik saw a half evil smile from Elena as she walked out. Vladik turned around and walked back to Cyrus.
�Regent, I assure you I was not careless.� Cyrus held up his hand in a gesture to silence Vladik.
�You were not careless. Three of the conductor units were overloaded. For this to happen a power bolt would have had to meet with magnetic resistance.� Vladik thought back and finally spoke.
�There was a minor skirmish in the Sarveka Cavern.� Cyrus knew the cavern well. It was heavily surrounded by magnetic forces and would have interfered with a power bolt.
�You may be excused for now but return here in the evening. I will show you how to field repair this kind of damage.� Vladik made a short bow and walked out. At least this time he wouldn�t be punished.

(It�s been awhile since I�ve worked on this one so I decided to give it some attention tonight.)
