PostFri Dec 01, 2006 11:42 pm    Jackson NOT directing Hobbit

It seems the LotR director will not direct the Hobbit. New Line has dumped him from the project, even though it's still in the planning stages.

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 28 When it comes to power games, some in Hollywood are beginning to learn a basic lesson of digital politics: the Internet plays rough.

Exclusive: Elijah Wood Talks The Hobbit
Frodo on the Rings prequels
When New Line announced several weeks ago that they planned to start work on The Hobbit, a good many Middle Earth enthusiasts were elated. Then New Line informed Jackson that, due to a legal dispute over Lord of the Rings earnings, his services would not be required for that project or a hitherto unknown 'second prequel'. Cue: one disappointed director, and the outrage of thousands of fans.

Yeah, I'm outraged. This is just wrong. I can guarantee you it won't be nearly as good as a Jackson production.

Probably a reaction to King Kong, (Not just the "legal troubles'). He went all out on it, and I hear it was not that good. A Shame, really.

The movie, or the income? The movie was fantastic.

Both, I've heard a lot of negitive reviews of the movie, the Income was blah, I believe. Feel free to post evidence that says otherwise, though.

Most liked King Kong, however, many, like myself, thought that it was a tad too long. I loved the movie, but, yes, it was too long.

Let's not jump to conclusions. Jackson may still direct it. This is show biz, after all. Things happen. I hope that somehow Jackson directs it. If not...Well...I dunno but I won't be happy. Sam Raimi was offered to direct it, though.

To that I say, no loss. Jackson isn't what he is hyped up to be.

King Kong was not really good at all. It took like 9 hours to get to the island alone. Whoops, I should have put a spoiler warning on that because it isn't a joke. It literally took that long to get to the actual namesake of the movie. Sad isn't it?

As for Jackson, he is no George Lucas (), however, he isn't bad perse. I think his handling of the LOTR trilogy was great and he tried to stick true to the books(more or less...). That is rare nowadays. It's a shame his involvment with the Hobbit will be nonexistant.

I think, while his handling of King Kong (which I have yet to see) wasn't spectacular, he has a great grasp on J.R.R. Tolkin's works. I feel like the Hobbit should be treated the same as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and he was a key component of the films.

I doubt he'll direct it, it's been announced that he was dropped, before the movie is even very far into pre production.

That's hilarious! And is it Jackson who's refusing, or New Line?

No, that site is wrong. New Line called him up and basically told him not to show up at the office on Monday.

This is absolutely ridiculous. I have no idea why they would do this. It's just stupid.

100,000,000 yen would only be $867,039.52...

Which still is a lot of money.
What's worth less than a Yen?

According to the article the NY Times stated it as "$100 million." I think they meant USD?

I'm sure they did. The Times would have specified otherwise.
