PostMon Dec 04, 2006 12:10 pm    Scientist Fights Church Effort to Hide Fossils

Quote:
Famed paleoanthropologist Richard Leakey is giving no quarter to powerful evangelical church leaders who are pressing Kenya's national museum to relegate to a back room its world-famous collection of hominid fossils showing the evolution of humans' early ancestors.

Leakey called the churches' plans "the most outrageous comments I have ever heard."

Well, those remarks were stupid. They just want to promote the myth of Creationism.

How said when people (both believers and non-believers) try to seperate religion and science. While the theory of evolution is far from complete, it does certainly have enough merit to be mentioned and presented as possibly acceptable.

Religion and science are non-overlapping magisteria. Meaning that they don't overlap. Religion answers the Meta-physical aspect while science answers the physical. Which is what people like that arch bishop don't seem to understand. And we did not evolve from apes, apes and humans had a common ancestor in the past.

And unfortunetly for him, The Austrolopithecines as well as what species of Homo that they have, ARE our ancestors.

Possible acceptable? It is the only reasonable theory.

No, it isn't. The amount of open mindedness from some people leave a lot to be desired.

The Church should not be fighting this and allow the fossils to be shown. Not only because it's an important theory that should be taught, but after learning about the different forms of man, I find it so cool.

I'll be open-minded to any theory with a decent amount of scientific evidence behind it. Creationism has none.

So you admit that you're close minded towards some theories. Ok, that's all I needed to know. So much for theory that if religion was wiped out, there would be complete and total tolerance in the world.

Anyways, as for the topic, it's doubtful the Church will win on this.

I'm close-minded if it doesn't make sense, and/or has no scientific evidence behind it.

Ah ok.

Anywho, I could have sworn that the Pope said that evolution should be taught in schools. Why are they doing this?

This is not the Catholic Church. This is evangelical and pentacostals I believe. The Catholic Church has no position for or against evolution. You are free to believe that the Earth was literally made in seven days, and take the literal biblical view. Or, you may take the view that God did indeed create the world, but somehow used evolution or something.

And while science and religion are non-overlapping, both are necessary when trying to understand truth. This is the unfortunate downfall of our culture though, is that people focus on science or religion exclusively.

Evolution or creation aside, the fossils exist. They should be displayed and made available to researchers.

Funny, I don't see scientists trying to keep ancient scriptures or artifacts from the theologians. In fact, I see a lot of science helping recover and preserve artifiacts and interpret ancient texts.
