Quote:
'Seinfeld' Star Michael Richards to Apologize on 'Letterman' for Racial Slurs

LOS ANGELES "Seinfeld" star Michael Richards has taped an interview to be shown on "Late Show With David Letterman" in which he offers a brief explanation and an apology for the racial epithet-laced tirade he unleashed during a stand-up comedy routine over the weekend, WCBS-TV reported.

Thank God he's apologized. This is sickening. Doesn't change my opinion of Kramer, the character, but it does of Richards, the actor.

Good Thing he apologized...but why did this happen in the first place?

I saw the video. Really disturbing...

However, I find it funny that the two black guys called him a "whiteboy" and a "cracker", yet they won't have to apologize. Oh...the irony...and one sidedness.

He lost his temper, apparently.

Whiteboy doesn't carry as much punch as the n-bomb.

Nor does "cracker," but the latter is incredibly offensive all the same.

Okay, so I just watched the Jerry Seinfeld interview on Letterman tonight featuring Michael Richards, and I know he's an actor, and a pretty good one (comically), but I think I can safely say that the things he said today - the apologies he made tonight and this and that - were from the heart. I think he really is sorry, and what Jerry said - also in the most sincere of tones - was that he could just tell that Richards was all distraut and apologetic over his comments.

And you know what? It doesn't excuse what he did, but I really think he is apologetic and sorry over what he did and that he does feel bad about it.

He shouldn't have said what he said, but amazingly enough, if someone like Eddie Murphy said someting like that about white people, would this be a problem? I belive Andy mentioned something about a "one sidedness"?

Anyways, he aplogized, the matter should be dropped we have more important things to worry about.

I didn't say it did. I'm saying it's hypocritical. They're offended by racial attacks and they too turn around and do it? It kind of kills their argument.

It's like if someone said they wanted peace and is tired of violence and to protest against violence, he becomes violent... Wouldn't make much sense would it?

However, as both RM and Chris said, he apologized and it's behind him. It's certainly unfortunate that this happened to begin with. As a comedian, he needs to learn to take some heckling. It happens...

To put it into analogy WeAz is sure to understand, it's like those few idiot fundamentalist Christians who go up to an abortion clinic and set off a bomb or something to protest abortion. Nonsensical hypocricy.

I'm over it, and I'm tired of the media barrage now. You can't get more sorry about saying something than Michael Richards, I can safely say that. Fox had the real Kramer on today and he really feels that it was nothing more than a mistake on Richards' part, as did Jerry Seinfeld last night, and I'm inclined to agree with them.

Richards doesn't know how to handle hecklers, really. He's not a stand-up comic, and supposedly (according to his friends, from their interpretations and knowledge and whatnot) tried to make his rant into a little comedy bit but it didn't end properly.

It's difficult to feel sympathy for victims of racism when they simply respond with more racism. If "*beep*" wasn't necessary, then is "cracker?"

First, I think racism is wrong. I'm not defending anything that was said. On either part.

However... Heckling is a part of stand-up. Racist jokes, to a respectful extent, are also a part of stand-up.
The things is, what Richards said was not a part of his act. It was not a playful joke. It was mean spirited and said in anger. He was wrong. He acknowledged being wrong. Good for him. But, if he wants to be a stand-up he's got to learn to handle hecklers and extreneous noise. It comes with the job. It is a comics responsability to handle a room. He did not handle the room.

One more thing. Words hurt far more than sticks and stones.

That's exactly what I said. I feel no sympathy for these people when they responded with racist remarks towards Richards.

I agree, and no one was denying that he had to deal with the heckeling, what the problem in my eyes are, is, he apologized, and you have people responding with more racism, who dont have to apologize....

Then again, I guess it's a fine line when you bring freedom of speech into the issue. There is not a clause in that amendment stating that we have the freedom of speech, unless it might hurt someones feelings, in which case all formentioned freedom becomes null and void.

It's not really, a freedome of speech issue per se, but you can hardly feel sorry for them, or they have some sort of problem when they respond to him as a 'cracker' and what not. Not saying what he did was not wrong, BUT,....its one of those two wrongs situations.

I suppose... but it's natural to go on the defense when you've been attacked. To be honest, I think people tend to be too sensative in general. As the song in, Avenue Q, states, "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist." Good show by the way... and a true song. Basiclly it's saying everyone should relax in situations like this.
