Quote: | Rep. Rangel will seek to reinstate draft
Americans would have to sign up for a new military draft after turning 18 under a bill the incoming chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee says he will introduce next year.
Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., said Sunday he sees his idea as a way to deter politicians from launching wars.
"There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way," Rangel said.

That darn tax and spend, cutting and running, lily-livered, bleeding-heart, liberal.
I thought this guy was a liberal? You would think so by how the right wing media types talk about him.

Don't worry, he tried this before:
Quote: | In 2003, Rangel proposed a measure covering people age 18 to 26. It was defeated 402-2 the following year. |

Actually i was wrong
Quote: | In 2003, several congressmen (Charles Rangel D-NY, James McDermott D-WA, John Conyers D-MI, John Lewis D-GA, Pete Stark D-CA, Neil Abercrombie D-HI) introduced legislation that would draft both men and women into either military or civilian government service, should there be a draft in the future. The Republican majority brought the bill up for a vote in the House of Representatives. It was defeated by a vote of 402-2. |
So it wasn't actually bringing it back, just making sure if it does it is both sexes.

If that's what it was about, I would support it. If women want to be truly equal, they should have to be up for the draft, too (if it were ever to be reinstated).
I don't know why that would have been defeated, though.

He is a bleeding-heart liberal. Just look at his rationale behind this.
Besides, I'm a bleeding-heart conservative and wouldn't support this.

So, you'd support being forcibly placed in the military? and sent to a warzone?

No. CJ Cregg just said that the time, before, when he called for this, he was only calling for equality when it came to the draft SHOULD it be reinstated again. Now, I'm not saying I want it back, but, if it did, I do believe that both men and women should be eligible for it.
In other words, no. I don't want the draft back, but, if it comes back, both sexes should be eligible.
