Wow...it's really weird to see a communist state respect religion.

Well, communist countries have been starting to open up in numerous respects. This is the most logical step, and I think Vietnam is a reasonable country to see this coming from.

Oh? How so? I'm not saying you're wrong, but I am curious as to what you mean.

Well, look at China. It has, in recent years, opened up the economic system a bit, losening the socialist grip and allowing for more capitalistic freedoms, and it has slightly begun to open up the governing process, I believe. Communism is starting to losen it's tight grip in some countries, as China's economic policies really show.

They're still communist, but they're starting to open up.

EDIT: China clearly wants to become a superpower and to become the biggest rival of the United States. If it wishes to do this, in the modern state of affairs, it sees a need to, I believe, open up the economic system and governing system. Otherwise it cannot compete as effectively with other free-market countries like its hoped-for arch rival, the US.

I believe much of East Asia, forgetting North Korea, wants to compete strongly in today's world market to improve their economic conditions, and in order to do so the communist system needs to be opened up, economically and otherwise. I think it's both inevitable and seen as necessary to compete in today's modern economy.

I've stayed in Vietnam for several months and surprisingly it's an extremely religious country, especially amongst those who follow Roman Catholicism and Buddhism, American Christians also have their own church in a Hotal Conference room on a Sunday there too. It's fairly diverse too, they have Muslims and some Hindus there. However yeh it still is under the grip of Communism.
